Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Provide 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best stem strength and flower production. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in hot climates, while morning shade works better in cool regions to protect early spring buds from frost damage. Plants grown in full shade will produce fewer blooms and weaker stems.

Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts to various soil types including clay as long as drainage is adequate. Amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage and prevent root rot. Unlike bigleaf hydrangeas, the white flower color won't change regardless of soil pH, so acidic or alkaline conditions work equally well.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply once or twice weekly during the first growing season to establish the shallow root system. Once established, maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season as these hydrangeas don't tolerate extended dry periods. An easy indicator is when leaves begin to droop, signaling the plant needs water. Mulch with 2-3 inches of shredded bark to help maintain even soil moisture.

Pruning Tips

Avoid pruning this hydrangea since it blooms on old wood and any trimming will reduce flowering for the current or following season. Only remove completely dead wood in early spring before new growth appears. Because cascade hydrangeas bloom earlier than other hydrangea types, protect buds from unexpected late spring frosts by covering plants with blankets if cold weather threatens after growth begins.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced rose fertilizer or slow-release hydrangea fertilizer in early spring after the ground thaws but before new growth emerges. For heavy bloomers in containers, fertilize monthly through late June to support the extended flowering period. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer as this encourages tender new growth that won't harden off before winter, potentially reducing cold hardiness.
