If you're looking for a native Sedge Grass with a lust for life, look no further! The Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge (Carex bicknellii) sways in the breeze and brings a welcome sense of motion to your landscape!
This variety was named "bicknellii" in honor of the 20th-century botanist Eugene Pintard Bicknell, who dedicated years to studying native plant species. Because of this, you may hear this plant being referred to as "Bicknell's Sedge".
This exciting plant produces long, narrow leaves that grow upright and flourish outward from its center, like most other Sedges. Its foliage ranges from brown to tan to green, and new spring growth is vibrantly green. Once summer rolls around, the Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge demonstrates why it's "copper shouldered".
Oval seed heads shoot from its middle with a warm coppery color. The flowers tower over the base of the Sedge and add a lot of additional visual interest to the garden. This ornamental Sedge will add a unique, fun texture to your yard throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 7.
Landscape Application:
Oval Sedge's lovely pompom shape makes it an excellent choice for ornamental borders or a border accent. Native to prairies and riparian areas, in sun or shade, the bright color of these showy Grasses is elevated and can grow 1 - 3 feet in height and width.
The Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge's tufted shape makes it a great border plant. Its airy height contrasts well with shorter flowering plants or deep greens or reds. If you love natives and have a pond or Rain Garden to capture runoff water in low spots, add Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge. It does well on sloped areas and filters water fabulously! It's great for embankments and garden beds.
