Growing Zones 5-9
Gorgeous radiant clear and clean blooms, the Coelestis Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus 'Coelestis') features huge, violet-blue, tropical-looking flowers cover this large vase-shaped shrub starting in mid-summer and continuing on through fall! Not many other flowering shrubs bloom during this time, so get ready for compliments. The flowers themselves are very showy, with deep, heathery blue petals held in an open style.
Called "single" blooms, this really means Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies will be coming to your house to party. It's a lot easier for them to drink nectar from open flowers. The color turns scarlet at the throat of the bloom. These vital resources feed your hungry droves all summer and into the fall! Their relaxing, romantic effect is only heightened by the healthy, dark green foliage. It makes a perfect foil for the lush, large blooms with their wide petals and sophisticated color backed by the lush, dark green foliage and airy upright branching.
Also known as Althea and related to the Tropical Hibiscus, the Rose of Sharon naturally grows in a graceful, upright way, you will only rarely have to worry about mundane tasks like pruning! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these shrubs grow to an easy-to-manage and alter 8-10 feet in height and 5-6 feet wide.
Planting and Application:

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Althea shrubs and trees perform well in almost any soil, except if it's too dry or too wet. This easy-care plant is a perfect choice, whether you are a beginner or have years of landscaping experience. Rose of Sharon loves sunshine and can tolerate some afternoon shade in warmer climates! Plant it in a spot where they will get at least six hours of sunlight a day for the most flowers. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Use a three-inch layer of arborist mulch over the top of the root system to keep them nice and cool.
This pretty shrub blooms on new wood. Prune Althea in early spring to either shape or control the height. You'll have flowers later that season, no matter how tightly you trim them in spring. You can even train these shrubs into small multi or single-stemmed tree forms! Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.
In some regions, Rose of Sharon can have so many seedlings that sprout nearby that they can become a nuisance. Simply deadhead your shrub after flowers fade and remove those seedheads before they mature to combat this.

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form
The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.
Tree Form:
These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.
Shrub Form:
These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
