A customer was sharing her childhood memories with us of when she would run up the hill behind her church in her Sunday best and pick the phlox that grew wild all along the hillside. She would gather little multi-colored bouquets to take to her Sunday school teacher and her mom and her grandma. She wanted to know if there were still phlox like that around. We told her, there was … but now it's even better!
Take the Cloudburst Tall Cushion Phlox (Phlox x 'Cloudburst') from Proven Winners®, for instance. This new Phlox Hybrid is superior to the old Garden Phlox in both performance and disease resistance. It also has better form and a more saturated lavender-purple color that doesn't fade. The flower clusters have an enchanting hot pink eye, too, and it just makes the colors appear richer! It's like a bullseye for pollinators and Hummingbirds alike!
But, it still has the same romantic effect that makes you want to run up to it and pick a small bouquet. It is an early bloomer and blooms for a long season. It has a mounding but billowy habit, so it looks both wild and structured at the same time! It will bloom all summer, right up to the first frost sometimes!
Growing into uniform mounds about 28 inches in height when in bloom, but spreading into a neat and tidy, uniform domed mound about 42 inches wide at maturity! It's like a Carpet Phlox and Tall Garden Phlox had a baby! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, this baby has the best of both parents!
Planting and Application:
Cloudburst would look great on a hillside if you have one, slowing erosion and rainwater, and transforming a hard-to-mow slope into a spectacle! But if not, this groundcover Phlox would look equally good in a mixed bed or border to fill and cover bare ground, happily mingling among larger plants as living mulch and facer plants!
Try this spreading perennial massed under a tree or filling large swaths of ground in the sun! Your entire planting will be sparkling in the fluttering wings of butterflies and buzzing with happy bees!
In a container garden where the space-saving Cloundburst demands to be examined up close, but that way you can better appreciate its lovely perfume! Pot up in mixed planters as both spiller and filler, while adding brilliant color to porches and patios in the sun! Snip a few scented blossoms and keep them even closer in a vase indoors for all-day enjoyment! Don't worry about depriving your pollinators - deadheading and trimming flowers for bouquets will encourage a rebloom later in the season!
- Dark Purple-Lavender Flower Clusters & Hot Pink Eye
- Billowy Domes of Green Foliage
- Lightly Scented - Great For Cut Flower Bouquets!
- Hummingbird & Pollinator Friendly
- Outdoor Containers, Garden Beds & Borders & Specimens
- Listed on Firewise Lists for Defensible Space Gardening
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Phlox are perfect for the beginner gardener. With proper care and planting site selection, Phlox are reliable herbaceous perennials that come back for you year after year! For the best performance, give this plant a full sun planting site with at least six hours of sun a day, in well-drained soil. Improve your drainage with a raised bed. Phlox appreciates regular water on a consistent schedule. If you are keeping your Garden Phlox in containers, don't let them dry out or sit in water.
Apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the root system to cut down on surface evaporation and enrich the soil but pull it away from directly touching the stems. Prune Phlox late in the season, down to the ground since these perennials die back anyway. Deadhead immediately after the flowers fade and you may just enjoy a rebloom later in the growing season! Divide your clumps every few years and enjoy increased vigor - and free plants to extend your Phlox enjoyment in your landscape!
- Best in Full Sun
- Well-Drained Enriched Soil
- Moderate Yet Consistent Moisture Needs
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune Late Fall/Winter
- Tolerates Cold & Relatively Pest Free
Definitely let this flower rain on your parade! Buy several and let the Proven Winners® Cloudburst Tall Cushion Phlox make your own scented memories of picking posies! Order enough today from Nature Hills!
Phlox Frequently Asked Questions
Does Tall Garden Phlox spread?
Most Garden Phlox do spread some but politely so - not getting into trouble and not jumping their borders. Should the clumps become too large you can easily divide them.
Should your deadhead Tall Garden Phlox?
Deadheading Phlox helps prevent some varieties from self-seeding and encourages a rebloom.
Where is the best place to plant Phlox?
Phlox needs well-drained enriched soil with good air circulation for best results. Mulch their beds and fertilize them each spring.
What happens to Phlox in the winter?
Phlox are herbaceous perennials that will lose their leaves and stems after frost and die back to the ground. In spring, they regrow from their root systems anew!
