At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Now, Nature Hills also sells a Blue Prince/Blue Princess combination Holly, another member of the Meserve Hybrid Hollies. However, the China Girl and China Boy Hollies grow larger. They are better able to tolerate the high heat of Zone 9 while remaining very cold hardy to Zone 5.

There are some visual differences between the two, as well. China Boy and China Girl varieties feature light green stems and bright green foliage that is shiny and slightly cupped. Each leaf margin turns a bit inward for added texture and interest in Holiday arrangements.

If you have the space, why not use both varieties of Holly combinations in your landscape? You could use a smaller, darker Blue Prince/Blue Princess combo on either end of a long hedge of China Boy/Girl to 'open and close' the look. How to Use China Boy Meets China Girl Holly Combo in the Landscape

Hollies take to pruning as easily as a Boxwood. Keep these at whatever height you'd like, no fuss, no muss. The dark green leaves are big and glossy and the perfect backdrop for those classic red Holly berries. Use branch cuttings for your holiday tables and vases and your guests will think you paid a florist to do your decorating!

No matter how you use these magnificent broad-leaved evergreens, you'll adore the tremendous show each fall and winter. Plant a specimen at the corner of your home to anchor your foundation planting. Showcase this lovely plant for all to see.

We recommend giving single specimens plenty of room to reach their mature height and mature width. Far better to enjoy their graceful upright rounded form as they grow naturally, than have to fight against them in a too-tight planting site. Don't make extra work for yourself.

One thing you may not have thought of, but those traditional spiky Holly leaves make a great deterrent in the landscape. Try them as a formal-looking 'safety measure' to control the flow of traffic across your lawn or along the length of your property.

It's usually far cheaper to install a 'living fence' than a hardscaped one. Hollies will grow together without any problems.

To create a solid screen, plant 3 feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. You could even use a staggered, zig-zagging row to fill in faster.

Trust us, no one will be tempted to tango with your China Holly combo planting. (You'll want to wear gloves when you prune it, as well!)

If you have a wide open area fill, try these as a mass planting. They'll be a remarkable feature in your Winter Garden. Use a zig-zagging series of rows along the length of the space. Keep new plantings weeded and mulched until the plants grow together.

#ProPlantTips for Care

While China Boy & China Girl are easy to grow in full sun or part shade exposure, full sun will produce the best berries.

These tough plants are quite adaptable to most soils. Ideally, they would have consistently moist, slightly acidic soils. But the most important thing is to give them a well-drained site.

Suspect poor drainage? Do you see puddles that remain for a long time after a rain? Use a raised bed or plant in a mounded heap of additional dirt added on top of poorly draining soil.

Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Cover the root system with a nice, thick layer of pine bark mulch, but pull it back a bit from the stems by several inches for air circulation.

In mid-fall, start studying your plants to see where you'll want to make your pruning cuts for Holiday Decorations. First, pick branches that cross each other, or are growing into the center of the plant.

Leave the rest for the plants to use to produce flowers next spring. After all, you won't see berries unless you let some flowers grow!

Even tightly sheared hedge plants should be allowed to bloom first before trimming. We recommend using a light hand with the trimmers. Hollies are lovely plants that need only a minor tip-pruning haircut to look tidy and neat.

The crisp foliage lends a strongly formal air all by itself, and the upright branch structure creates a strong outline all year long.

Where to Plant

Sunlight: This Holly thrives in full sun, meaning six or more hours of direct sun daily; this is crucial for the female ‘China Girl’ to produce the maximum number of attractive red berries. Partial shade is acceptable, but the tradeoff will be a thinner plant and fewer berries each winter.
Soil: They prefer a rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.0 to 6.0). If you have heavy clay, incorporate liberal amounts of compost and some coarse sand to ensure water drains away quickly; Hollies hate wet feet. For sandy soil, mix in peat moss or composted pine bark to help the soil retain moisture and maintain the necessary acidity.

Watering Requirements

For the first year, water your Holly deeply two to three times per week until the roots are well-established. Once mature, this Holly combo is quite drought-tolerant, but consistent summer moisture encourages the healthiest growth and best berry set. Inconsistent watering during heat waves will stress the plants, resulting in premature leaf drop and smaller or fewer berries. Aim for a consistent total of about an inch of water per week from rain or irrigation.

Pruning Tips

This Holly is grown primarily for its showy winter berries, which develop on old wood (last year’s growth). The best time for shaping is in late winter or early spring, just before new growth starts, but after the worst of the cold has passed. Limit heavy cuts to maintain the berry potential on the female plant, focusing instead on light tipping cuts to encourage fullness or thinning out crowded interior branches to improve air circulation and light penetration. Think of it like a light haircut to maintain a desired shape, keeping the plant healthy and productive.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (like a 10-10-10) or one formulated for acid-loving plants (such as an Azalea/Rhododendron blend) in early spring as new growth begins. Feed lightly, as too much fertilizer can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of berries. A critical "what to avoid" is high-nitrogen feeding late in the season, after mid-summer; this encourages tender, soft growth that won't have time to harden off before winter, making it extremely vulnerable to cold damage.

Extremely Hardy

I bought 40 of these plants around July last year. They came on time and packaged securely. Despite being shipped at the height of the summer heat, every single one arrived healthy and even had some berries. During the last days of fall, the rabbits ate down every one - no leaf was spared. I thought I had lost them all! The next spring, however, they ALL made a come back and are now doing well. We've added a protective mesh around them to keep the rabbits away. I live in Zone 4b
