Native plants that feed our wildlife are becoming an important design consideration. These days, people are hunting for special plants that are beautiful, and help the environment.

Try our magnificent, extra cold hardy, tree form, Canada Red Select Cherry Tree (Prunus virginiana 'Shubert Select'). It looks great all year, and is very easy-care. Your local songbirds will thank you!

This drought tolerant choice provides nectar, food, shelter for butterflies, birds and cute little chipmunks.

It features a pyramidal to oval habit. In winter, the uniform canopy and branch structure looks fabulous with a snowy cover. Pair this with a sturdy, straight trunk, and you have a formal tree that perfectly suits many different garden styles, from ultra-modern to rustic.

Enjoy a fragrant cloud of white blossoms each spring produced by this dependable plant. Tiny flowers are arranged on 6-inch long racemes. This showy display covers every branch tip each spring.

Shiny green leaves emerge in the spring after the flowers. They age to a deep shade of purple and remain this knockout shade for the rest of the growing season. The fall foliage deepens up even more, and adds some orange and red tones.

Tiny, tart, dark chokecherries develop from the flowers. Allow them to decorate the shrub in long, drooping clusters, or harvest a few to craft your own special jams or jellies.

These deep purple-red cherries were once a staple food of Native Americans and settlers. Now, avid wildcrafters use them for jam and wine with careful preparation to remove the seeds. Don’t forget to add honey or sugar to sweeten them up.

Many people simply choose to allow the birds to eat their fill of these native fruits! As you might imagine, these small chokecherries are highly attractive to birds, who flock to this plant later in summer as the fruit ripens.

A waterwise tree, Canada Red Select Cherry tree adapts to many soil types conditions and shrugs off extreme cold. It becomes quite drought tolerant after the first few seasons and requires very little ongoing care.

We know you’ll adore these expertly grown and shaped Canada Red Select Cherry trees from Nature Hills. This outstanding chokecherry variety gives you a big boost of visual interest. Order yours today!

How to Use Canada Red Select Cherry Tree in the Landscape

Give these gorgeous trees a prime spot on your property. Use one at the corner of your house to anchor your foundation planting.

Or, use one near your front walkway as a beautiful accent. Underplant with spring-flowering bulbs, easy-care perennials and evergreen groundcovers for a picture-perfect display.

Repeat them along the length of your driveway, or property line to delineate your space. Mix with Flowering Crabapples for a sophisticated, bird-friendly showing of blooms and fruit.

They will become a favorite feature in patio plantings, or mixed borders. Include them on the sunny side of your windbreaks and shelterbelts to boost the visual appeal. You’ll love the look of the deep foliage, and the delicious fragrance of the blossoms in springtime.

Canada Red Select Cherry tree is a nice choice to add to a permaculture setting or wildlife landscape. It looks great and works hard for you all year-long.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant in full sun for the best results. Give the plant at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

It requires well-drained soils to thrive. If your soil holds water, create a raised planting bed to improve drainage. Or, create a mounded heap of soil to plant in.

While your plant is young, please provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Give a thick layer of mulch over the top of the root system. Once it becomes established in your landscape, it will become quite drought tolerant.

Prune in late winter, as needed. Remove crossing or broken branches to open the canopy to sunlight and air circulation.
