Why Choose Chicagoland Green™ Boxwood?

  • Cold Hardy: Specifically bred to withstand freezing temperatures, it performs well in USDA zones 5-8.
  • Year-Round Beauty: Retains its vibrant, deep green foliage through winter, unlike some varieties that may bronze in cold weather.
  • Low Maintenance: Naturally compact and slow-growing, it requires minimal pruning to maintain its shape.
  • Versatile Design Options: Perfect for hedges, borders, foundation plantings, and container gardens.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Known for its excellent resistance to common boxwood pests and diseases, including blight.

Landscaping Ideas For Chicagoland Green™ Boxwood

This Boxwood was developed by the Chicago Botanic Garden to withstand the harsh winters of the Midwest, making it a resilient option for regions prone to extreme temperature swings. With its tidy, rounded shape and rich green leaves, it brings a polished, elegant look to any landscape design!

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 8, this Boxwood can grow into a 3-4 foot tall and wide round form without needing much maintenance!

  1. Formal Hedges: Use Chicagoland Green™ to create well-manicured Boxwood hedges that define garden beds, walkways, or property boundaries.
  2. Foundation Plantings: Add structure and greenery around your home with this versatile shrub.
  3. Mixed Borders: Combine with colorful perennials and ornamental grasses for a layered and textured look.
  4. Topiary Shapes: Its dense foliage makes it ideal for creating rounded or sculpted topiary forms.
  5. Container Plantings: Place in pots or planters on patios, balconies, or entryways for an elegant, evergreen touch.

Boxwood Care & Maintenance

  • Light Requirements: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid planting in waterlogged areas.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.
  • Pruning: Prune or shear in late spring or early summer after the first flush of growth to maintain its shape.
  • Mulching: Add a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Winter Protection: These evergreens need some wind protection in winter if grown on an exposed site, otherwise, you can treat them with wilt-stop and it's recommended you water these shrubs very well in the fall to prepare them for winter.
