The finely textured foliage of the Chicagoland Green® Boxwood (Buxus x 'Glencoe') tolerates pruning and shearing beautifully! Chicagoland Green® is one of our favorites to be used as a dense shrub for hedges and borders! This fantastic hybrid broadleaf evergreens was discovered in the Chicago Botanic Garden and has been a landscaping favorite ever since!
The bright green glossy spring leaves are accented by tiny blooms that the bees love and mature to dark green for the rest of the year. There's no need to worry about bronzing or bleaching in the sun or heat!
Chicagoland Green® is a medium-sized shrub, known for its cold hardiness and good winter color. It grows with a uniform, oval, rounded growth habit that will slowly reach its mature height and width in approximately 15 years. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 8, this Boxwood can grow into a 3-4 foot tall and wide round form without needing much maintenance!
Planting and Application:
If your garden needs classic lines and timeless greenery, you will love having the Chicagoland Green® and its emerald green cloak all year! Providing a beautiful counterpoint to a dreary winter and a refreshing sharpness to the dog days of summer. The lush greenery lasts all year long and this mid-sized garden gem will stand out in both sun or partial shade!
Chicagoland Green® is perfect for the classic Boxwood hedge of English garden fame that so many landscaping designers love! This Boxwood would be perfectly happy being the formal gatekeeper to any garden bed or adorning your foundation planting.
Perhaps, though, you aren't interested in a formal hedge, but lean more toward plants shaped geometrically or into fancy topiary? Chicagoland Green® can be sheared into just about any shape and responds well to harsh pruning but also looks great when left to grow naturally!
Have some fun and pot up your Chicagoland Green® in a fancy planter or container and train it into a topiary! Any shape your imagination can think of will suit this shrub just fine! Take it slow and soon you will have a specimen and conversation piece in your landscape, porch or patio!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Boxwood requires full sun and handles some part shade in hotter climates, needs to be planted in well-drained soil. Provide moderate moisture for new shrubs, but this Boxwood tolerates some drought and will grow in dry soil but prefers well-drained, loamy, sandy, or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline. These evergreens need some wind protection in winter if grown on an exposed site, otherwise, you can treat them with wilt-stop and it's recommended you water these shrubs very well in the fall to prepare them for winter.
Prune or shear after the first flush of new spring growth. You can shear again in summer to clean up any new growth but allow any growth after to harden off before winter. Provide a 3-4-inch layer of mulch around the root system to keep them happy!
