#ProPlantTips For Care

This low-maintenance flowering shrub tolerates full sun and heat, as long as the soil is mulched. In USDA Zones 9 - 10, give them some shade in the afternoon for best results. They require 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ideally, Rhododendrons and Azaleas love a cool, moist, slightly acidic soil that is high in organic matter.

When planting Azaleas in the ground, you'll get better results if you plant them too high, than too low. Mound up when planting by leaving a few inches of the root ball showing. Pull pine bark or pine straw mulch up to cover the root system Use 3-4 inches of pine bark or pine straw mulch to add acidity and improve your soil over time. Please reapply a mulch layer each year. If your soil is highly alkaline or doesn't drain well, try Encore® Azalea in exterior planters with large drainage holes. Plant them in an Acid Lovers potting soil mix.

Give your shrubs a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Water containers regularly, or set them on a drip irrigation system to save time. Weed your plantings regularly, as their shallow roots won't like the competition. Apply a good, organic, slow-release Acid Lovers fertilizer in early spring according to the product directions.

Lightly prune to shape immediately after the spring bloom is past. Avoid any major summer or fall pruning, or you will remove next year's spring flowers.

  • Grows in Full Sun and Partial Shade

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big do Rhododendrons get?

Encore® Autumn Ivory® Azalea can grow 2-3 feet in height and in width, when grown in optimal conditions.

Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
