Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.
Young Plants (6 months to 18 months old)
| Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |
| 4" Container | 0.31 - 0.87 dry quarts | 0.35 - 0.96 dry liters |
| 4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |
| 6" Container | 1.4 dry quarts | 1.59 dry liters |
| 1 Quart | 1 dry quart | 1.1 dry liters |
| 5.5" Container | 1.89 dry quarts | 2.08 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones
Need a unique gift or accent for your home or office? Then you need to check out the traditional plant art form called Kokedama! Easy to care for and maintain, Kokedama has been practiced in Japan for centuries, translating literally as 'Moss Ball', Kokedama is a form of Bonsai where a plant has its roots and soil bundled in a ball of moss and wrapped in twine or string, eliminating the need for a pot or container! Now Nature Hills Nursery is proud to be shipping several varieties of ready-to-enjoy Kokedamas!
The gorgeous naturally Bonsai-looking woody trunked Fabian Aralia (Polyscias scutellaria) is a lovely tropical evergreen plant with deep olive green, waxy rounded leaves that are densely and horizontally held along the branching stems. Sometimes with a reddish to purple tinge to the undersides of each. Each leaf has tiny red-tinged pointed accents along the margin and new leaves have red veins for further accenting!
Aralia in Feng Shui represents love, energy and calming effects and are perfect low-maintenance air purifying plants that improve your health while increasing oxygen levels in your home or office! These are easy to care for tropical houseplants that do not need much in the way of fussing over or care! Best of all, the Kokedama root 'binding' method - they will never need to be repotted!
Displaying Your Kokedama!
Be sure to display these robust plants on an office desk at work, hang it in your bathroom, create a conversation starter as a side table accent or a hanging display in the sunny corner of a study, or decorate a bright entry console atop a carved wood or driftwood stand.
You can either suspend your plant in a sunny window in your kitchen or dining room. Hang in groups of three by shimmering chains or macrame plant hangers for a unique suspended display, or on a wooden plant swing.
Tabletop displays of Aralia look great on a desk, side table, or atop a shelf for a truly unique focal point! Even an open bookcase near a window is an ideal place to show off your Kokedama! Plus Moss Ball plants are portable, so you can display your prize anywhere you desire!
Display your Kokedama on a bed of smooth polished stones, in a pretty ceramic tray, shallow glass dish, or carved wooden bowl to keep moisture away from the furniture. Show off several Kokedama on stands of varying heights, and be sure to include bushy, blooming, and trailing varieties!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Polyscias Fabian does prefer higher air humidity, so misting your plant or increasing the relative humidity around the plant is preferable. Hang or display in any kind of bright, yet indirect sunlight for the most color, but Aglaonemas can tolerate some partial shade and office lighting too (though you may notice fewer blooms).
To water your Kokedama, simply submerge the bottom 3/4ths of your moss ball in a dish or the sink and let soak for 5-10 minutes or so. Remove to a draining area for 20 minutes to let excess water run out of the root system. Then place it back into its display. Repeat as necessary. Aralia prefers to dry out ever so slightly between waterings.
Because of many factors, the watering frequency will vary throughout the year. Dry winters with dehumidifiers running - you may need to water a couple of times a week! If your Kokedama is as light as air or your plant is wilting, you need to check it a bit more often or soak it a bit longer each time. If the plant is heavy and it's a humid summer week, you can skip watering. Root rot is a death sentence for many plants.
