Each of the pristine, snow-white flowers shine like fresh snow throughout the hottest of growing zones! The Alaska Azalea (Azalea indica 'Alaska') is accented by chartreuse, the yellow-green blotch on the throat. This perfectly chic color combination ensures that these pretty cultivars will coordinate beautifully with many other flowering plants.

Alaska Azaleas start producing showy trusses of blooms in the late midseason. Each hose-in-hose flower measures two inches across and can range from single to semi-double forms. You'll appreciate the cool, polished tones each spring; along with refined evergreen foliage through a year-long season. Even the rounded growth habit is incredibly versatile for use in partial shade.

The pollinators and hummingbirds adore these dreamy white blooms! Alaska was the winning Evergreen Azalea of the Year for the Southwest Region. It displays more sun tolerance than others and resistance to Phytophthora root rot. Very heat and humidity tolerant, these Azaleas thrive in USDA growing zones 9-11!

Planting and Application:

Wonderful in courtyard plantings, Alaska Azalea brings an Asian sensibility to your space. Create a Zen Garden with a partnership of your favorite Japanese Maple tree and an expressive spread of Japanese Anemone perennials. Count on high-performance Alaska Azalea as a mainstay in your Shade Garden. These broad-leaved evergreen shrubs are an easy way to bring structure to your planting beds ... making a wonderful backdrop for spring-blooming bulbs, Hosta and Foam Flower.

Keep them in raised beds with acidic soil, or grow them in oversized containers and planters to support their favored environment. Alaska Azalea brings a look that is both fresh and cool to your garden design. Use several to create a crisp year-round hedge on the east or north side of your home. Plant them four feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Select a planting site with well-drained soil and don't plant Azaleas too deeply. They perform with no more than six hours of direct sunlight daily, please provide afternoon shade for the best results. Azaleas require slightly acidic soil with a lower pH, so create a planting mound in alkaline soils. Use a three-inch layer of mulch or pine straw over the roots to keep them cool and moist. Provide water on a regular basis during dry times when you don't receive rainfall. Keep the surrounding areas weeded, as Azaleas have shallow roots that resent competition. Prune to shape them right after the blooms are finished in spring. Feed them with a high-quality fertilizer designed for ericaceous flowering plants.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade/Afternoon Shade
  • Enriched Well-Drained Organic Soil
  • Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Heat & Drought Tolerant
  • Very Disease Resistant

Disease-resistant and heat-hardy, the Alaska Azalea is a fantastic flowering shrub that is contrary to its name and loves the hottest parts of the US! Order yours today and cool down your steamy landscapes with the help of NatureHills.com!

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant an Azalea bush?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big does an Azalea bush get?

Alaska Azalea can reach around 3-4 feet in height and 4-6 feet in width in optimal conditions.

Are Azalea bushes low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low-maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
