Beautiful Blooms & Native Hardiness - False Indigo Baptisia!

Bit flowering spires with Pea-family florets, the dramatic candles of vibrant flowers of the False Indigo (Baptisia) will amaze you all spring! False Indigo plants bloom for up to six weeks and are available in colors ranging from blue and white, to yellow, pink, and purple.

Forming fast-growing vase-shaped to shrubby mounded growth from the ground to flower in just a few weeks each spring!

With gray-green oval leaves and showy flowers, False Indigo makes a gorgeous cut flower to display in a vase! But with the number of Pollinators and occasional Hummingbirds that will drop by to sip the nectar, you will prefer leaving the blossoms outside!

Fall brings green Pea-like seedpods that dry to brown and rattle in the wind throughout the fall. Songbirds and ground birds in the wild eat these seeds!

Native forms like the Blue False Indigo and the many equally showy cultivars available!

Landscaping With Baptisia

This disease and insect-resistant plant offers various landscape uses! When in bloom, the Baptisia is a dramatic and tidy specimen and focal point! Once the blooms fade, the foliage mounds are incredible backdrops and fillers as they allow other later blooming plants to shine!

Include False Indigo in your mix or solid garden borders and as a background planting! Plant in mixed shrub borders and mixed perennial gardens for showy spring blooms! Cutting gardens, Cottage borders, and mass plantings are all perfect uses for these perennials!

Excellent for drought-tolerant gardens, False Indigo, also known as Rattle Weed, Rattlebrush, Indigo Weed, and Horsefly Weed, these prairie natives and their cultivars remain able to tolerate Xeric and arid conditions! That means Rock Gardens and Xeric plantings benefit from these vibrant spires!

With its attractive foliage, the bushy perennial is a great addition as a backdrop to a garden with plants that bloom later in the summer.

Baptisia Care

The False Indigo plant is an easy perennial to grow and thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soil. It will grow in full sun to part shade, but the flowers do best in full sun.

This vibrant Perennial is cold and heat-hardy, long-lived tolerates poor soils! Provide moderate moisture regularly throughout their first growing season and after, these deep, tough rootstocks can handle drought. You can divide when the plant is dormant, but be aware the roots can reach 10 to 12 feet deep.

All plants appreciate mulched beds, but because these are Legume-family members, they naturally fix nitrogen in the soil, so they won't need much in the way of fertilizer!

Prune these plants back in the very early spring, trimming the stems down close to the ground.
