Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Lovely soft purple, the Purple Smoke False Indigo (Baptisia x 'Purple Smoke') is a seedling of Baptisia australis and Baptisia alba which resulted in a spectacular plant with charcoal-green stems and dozens of giant spires of dusty purple flower heads! Purple Smoke is a vigorous grower that becomes more impressive every year as it matures!

A fantastic pollinator plant, the bees and butterflies will love these mid-sized perennials as they call a host of beneficial insects each spring. You'll enjoy these blooms too because there are plenty to go around for you to create lovely floral bouquets!

Purple Smoke is a good, vigorous grower, extremely long-lived, and destined to become a favorite in the garden. Remarkably cold-hardy, this Baptisia thrives throughout USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9! Growing into a vase-shaped 4 - 5 foot tall and 3 - 4 wide fountain of blue-green foliage!

Planting and Application:

A hardy hybrid of the native American prairie plant, Purple Smoke Indigo has all the same resilient qualities! Each spring, these perennials quickly grow to fill bare spots in your mixed borders and sunny landscapes each year! Baptisia looks attractive by itself, against walls and fences, in mass plantings, in large groupings, and in long rows as backdrops!

The soft purple spikes of flowers make False Indigo a striking specimen amid other spring plantings, bridging the gap between early spring and summer blooms! Members of the Pea family, Baptisia roots help fix nitrogen in the soil, making soil health better! This makes them great to use in poor soil and around your Victory Garden or orchard, bringing in the bees to help pollinate your fruiting shrubs and trees!

Cottage and Meadow gardens gain a tall and broad accent and that unusual blue hue brings sublime coloration to any landscape! Plant False Indigo around your defensible zone for a pretty firewise landscaping plant! Thriving in tough conditions and the hell-strip, Baptisia are hardy and thrive in Rock Gardens, poor soil, and Xeric conditions once they're established.

Plant in out-of-the-way locations, along hot sunny foundations, and in native plant gardens, without worry the deer and rabbits will eat them up. Don't have a big yard? This tidy perennial works fantastic in large containers as a 'thriller' and 'filler' or as a specimen in decorative planters! Any sunny patio or seating area will be the perfect places to display these purple fountains!

  • Gorgeous Smokey Purple Pea-Like Long Floral Spikes
  • Upright Vase-Shaped Fine-Textured Blue-Green Foliage
  • Beneficial Insects & Pollinators Adore It!
  • Lovely Cut Flowers & Fall Seed Pods
  • Great Native For Soil Improvement, Native Restorations & Firewise Landscapes
  • Specimens, Backdrops, Accents & Tricky Sites

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Full sun is best for this Perennial's most successful flowering and performance. It grows well in average to dry soil but adapts to most conditions. Baptisia has a very deep tap root, allowing it to survive long dry periods and making it a challenge to move once it is established. Provide consistent watering throughout its first year in the ground, but once established, these are xeric plants! All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the root system whether they are in the ground or planters.

Deadhead after the flowers fade to clean up the mounds. In early spring, simply prune Baptisia to the ground. Transplant in the early spring if you must, but the deep taproots can sometimes resist being divided.

  • Loves Sun & Heat!
  • High Performance, Salt & Drought Tolerant
  • Versatile & Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soils
  • Low Maintenance & Low Moisture Once Established
  • Deadhead After Bloom & Prune Early Spring
  • Rabbits & Deer & Drought Resistant

Hardy and resilient, the Purple Smoke False Indigo is as tough and beautiful as its native cousins! Order this and many more incredible perennials to add to your landscape today from Nature Hills Nursery!
