Covering a wide band from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast through parts of the Pacific Northwest, Texas, and the Southwest, Zone 7 gardens enjoy mild winters, long growing seasons, and access to an extraordinary range of plants.

This collection features our complete Zone 7 inventory. From cold hardy avocado trees to heat-tolerant evergreens, drought-resistant perennials to lush flowering shrubs, Zone 7 gardeners have the widest selection of any growing zone.

What Thrives in Zone 7?

Flowering trees reach their peak in Zone 7. Crape Myrtles, Dogwoods, Japanese Maples, Southern Magnolias, Redbuds, and Cherry Blossoms all deliver spectacular seasonal displays. Cold hardy avocado trees and fig trees produce real harvests here.

Heat tolerant shrubs and perennials combine with cold hardy favorites to create an unmatched plant palette. Hydrangeas of every type, Gardenias, Camellias, Azaleas, Knockout Roses, Lavender, and drought-tolerant ornamental grasses all perform beautifully. Shade hydrangeas for Zone 7 are especially popular for understory plantings.

Evergreen screening with Leyland Cypress, Holly, Arborvitae, and Cryptomeria provides year-round privacy. Drought tolerant shrubs like Nandina, Loropetalum, and native grasses are smart choices for water-conscious landscaping.

Zone 7 Gardening Tips

Zone 7's long season (March through November) means nearly year-round planting is possible. Fall planting is ideal for most trees and shrubs. Mulch to conserve moisture during hot summers, and provide afternoon shade for plants at the edge of their heat tolerance.

FAQ's for Buying Zone 7 Plants FAQs Online

What is USDA Hardiness Zone 7?
Zone 7 covers areas with average annual minimum temperatures between 0°F and 10°F. It spans the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, parts of the Pacific Northwest, Texas, and the Southwest. Zone 7 has mild winters and long growing seasons, supporting an extremely wide range of plants.

Can you grow avocado trees in Zone 7?
Yes. Cold hardy avocado varieties have been bred to tolerate Zone 7 winters. They perform best in sheltered, south-facing locations with well-drained soil. Protect young trees during their first few winters with mulch and frost cloth during extreme cold snaps.

What hydrangeas grow best in shade in Zone 7?
Several hydrangea varieties excel in Zone 7 shade, including Bigleaf Hydrangeas (macrophylla types like Endless Summer), Oakleaf Hydrangeas, and Climbing Hydrangeas. These prefer morning sun with afternoon shade protection from Zone 7 summer heat.

When is the best time to plant in Zone 7?
Zone 7 allows planting from early March through late November. Fall (October-November) is the ideal time for most trees and shrubs because roots establish during mild winter months. Spring planting works well for perennials and tender plants.

What are drought tolerant plants for Zone 7?
Popular drought-tolerant Zone 7 plants include Nandina, Loropetalum, Ornamental Grasses (Muhly, Fountain Grass), Lavender, Russian Sage, Crape Myrtle, and native plants like Coneflower and Butterfly Bush. These reduce water needs once established.
