Where to Plant

Sunlight: Plan for a location that receives at least six hours of direct sun daily. Providing full sun is essential for the richest foliage color and the most abundant, stable bloom production; too much shade will cause the stems to stretch and flop.
Soil: This plant needs excellent drainage, so choose a spot with average, well-drained to even sandy or poor soil. If your soil is heavy clay, skip the compost and instead mix in coarse sand, grit, or fine gravel to ensure excess water quickly moves away from the roots, preventing rot.

Watering Requirements

When you first plant, water deeply and consistently once or twice a week until your Sedum has established itself, usually within the first growing season. Once mature, 'Dream Dazzler' is exceptionally drought tolerant and will only require supplemental watering during extended periods of extreme heat or drought. Inconsistent or excessive watering is the enemy of Sedum, as overwatering leads to root rot and an open, stressed plant with duller coloration.

Pruning Tips

Like most upright Stonecrops, this plant flowers on new wood, so you will want to wait until early spring when you see new growth emerging at the base. At that time, simply snip all of the previous year's dead stems down to about one inch above the soil line. This cleanup prevents a messy look and clears the way for vigorous, colorful new shoots to pop up from the crown, keeping the plant tidy and strong.

Fertilizer Needs

Sedums are light feeders and actually prefer lean soil, so often no fertilizer is needed for good performance. If you feel your soil is extremely poor, apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer (like a 10-10-10) very sparingly in early spring as new growth starts. What to avoid: Never use high-nitrogen liquid feeds or fertilize past mid-summer, as this promotes weak, lush growth that is prone to flopping under the weight of the flower heads and is easily damaged by early frost.

Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

SunSparkler® Dream Dazzler Sedum loves the full sun and tolerates humidity, heat and sun all summer without fail. Handling some part sun in hotter climates. Stonecrop has very low moisture needs and is very cold-hardy in growing zones 4 and up. Thriving in any kind of well-drained soil, Sedum tolerates poor or rocky soils with no problem. In fact, Stonecrop grown in organically rich soil are actually lanky and weak-stemmed. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch for best results.

Stonecrop benefits from division every few years and the removal of dead debris each early spring. But other than that, these tough perennials require no other work! These are deer and rabbit-resistant, plus they are pest and disease-free.
