Where to Plant

Sunlight: Provide at least 4 to 6 hours of morning sun for the most vibrant pink foliage. While it handles full shade well in hotter climates, you will notice the leaf color becomes more muted and silvery without adequate light.
Soil: These plants demand rich, organic soil that drains as well as a colander. If you have heavy clay, mix in a few handfuls of compost or plant them in a raised mound to prevent the crown from rotting in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to ensure the root ball never completely dries out while it settles in. Once mature, Berry Smoothie is remarkably drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during a heatwave can cause the leaf edges to crisp or the vibrant color to fade. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the plant rather than frequent light sprinkles.

Pruning Tips

Coral Bells are evergreen in many zones, so think of pruning as a spring cleanup rather than a heavy chop. In early spring, snip off any tattered or winter-browned leaves at the base to make room for the fresh "smoothie-pink" growth emerging from the center. Since they bloom on new wood, you can also cut back the spent flower spikes after they fade to encourage the plant to put its energy back into those stunning leaves.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring as soon as you see new growth peeking out. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this can force soft, tender growth that won't be tough enough to survive the first hard frost. At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Cold and drought tolerant and withstanding heat and humidity, nothing seems to faze this Perennial plant. Plant in either full shade or partial shade, but you’ll have better color and more flowers in more sun. Plant in enriched, well-drained soil that remains moderately, consistently moist. But once established, Coral Bells can be drought tolerant. In climates that are more arid or prone to drought, all plants appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold in moisture and keep the roots cool. Prune back foliage in early spring before new growth begins.
