How to Use Inabe Shidare Japanese Maple in the Landscape
One of the quickest and easiest ways to raise the curb appeal and the value of your home is to add beautiful and interesting new landscaping. This is a perfect tree to place next to a pond, along a dry creek bed or water garden for a designer look. They make a wonderful accent tree for entryways.
Use them as focal points in a Meditation Garden, or placed in a formal, Japanese-style garden. Plant near your patio to gaze upon in wonder.
Inaba Shidare is also the ideal container plant either on the patio or as a container specimen in the landscape.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Inaba Shidare requires good drainage and does best when planted in acid soils rich in organic matter. A pH of 6 - 6.5 is perfect.
Improve your soil when planting with the Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic Planting Mix. Mix in 50% planting mix to the total volume of soil replaced when planting. To maintain a lower pH, fertilize with Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer.
When faced with poorly draining soils, plant the Inaba Shidare on a mound at least 18 inches high. This will ensure oxygen gets to the root system. Mulch the mound to keep the root cool and cut down on erosion.
Inaba Shidare does well in part shade to full sun, but needs protection from the afternoon sun in the warmer climates. Mulch to 2 feet outside of the canopy and 3 to 4 inches deep to keep the root both cool and moist by decreasing evaporation.
The growth rate is outstanding. These 3-year-old trees are shipped strong and healthy. Plant them and keep them well-watered and they will grow fast - 1-2 feet a year for the first few years. The tree will double in size in 5 years!

I ordered a Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple tree; instead I received a Tamukeyama Japanese maple tree. What happened to my tree that I ordered?
I was pleased with the timely response to my concern with my Japanese Maple tree. I am happy to report the tree seems to be flourishing with new growth and beautiful color.

The graft for the tree is 20 inches above the root ball. To tall for my use. I was told that I couldn’t return it due to health restrictions.I understand that-don’t need to put back with others if it picked up contracting some disease. I planted it in a pot. I hate to throw away a living plant. I have other dwarf weeping Japanese maple trees and love how the trunk and limbs twist and curl. This one is definitely NOT what I thought I was getting.
I Got what I ordered. There was no issue with delivery because it was packaged well. The tree is growing fast.

Late winter we had a warming trend, and it leafed out - then we had a cold period and the leaves died - but now elsewhere on tree it has leafed out and looks great
Japanese maples can be tricky in that late-winter warm spell situation, and it is genuinely reassuring when a tree pushes through the frost damage and comes back from other buds the way yours did. My tree does not look anything like the photo but is tall (3’)with a small leaf section. I am sure after some pruning and future growth it will spread out but have received several compliments already.
