I received the wrong tree from what I ordered!

I ordered a Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple tree; instead I received a Tamukeyama Japanese maple tree. What happened to my tree that I ordered?

I was pleased with the timely response to my concern with my Japanese Maple tree

I was pleased with the timely response to my concern with my Japanese Maple tree. I am happy to report the tree seems to be flourishing with new growth and beautiful color.

New growth and good color on an Inaba Shidare is a genuinely encouraging sign, especially after any early concern. This cultivar can take a little time to settle in, so it's great to hear it's moving in the right direction. Thanks for the update and for giving the tree a chance to find its footing. The graft for the tree is 20 inches above the root ball

The graft for the tree is 20 inches above the root ball. To tall for my use. I was told that I couldn’t return it due to health restrictions.I understand that-don’t need to put back with others if it picked up contracting some disease. I planted it in a pot. I hate to throw away a living plant. I have other dwarf weeping Japanese maple trees and love how the trunk and limbs twist and curl. This one is definitely NOT what I thought I was getting.

Weather challenges

Late winter we had a warming trend, and it leafed out - then we had a cold period and the leaves died - but now elsewhere on tree it has leafed out and looks great

Japanese maples can be tricky in that late-winter warm spell situation, and it is genuinely reassuring when a tree pushes through the frost damage and comes back from other buds the way yours did. Inaba Shidare is a resilient variety, and once it settles in you should see that deep burgundy laceleaf filling out nicely each season. Thanks for sharing the update.

My tree does not look anything like the photo but is tall (3’)with a small leaf section

My tree does not look anything like the photo but is tall (3’)with a small leaf section. I am sure after some pruning and future growth it will spread out but have received several compliments already.

Hi Ed, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The photo on our website shows a mature Inaba Shidare to illustrate the variety’s long-term shape and color. We ship younger trees because they establish faster and travel safely; as yours grows, it will develop the signature cascading, laceleaf canopy over the next few seasons. Color and fullness also vary by time of year. Happy Planting - Nature Hills Customer Support

So far so good planted about a month ago now fall is here so leaves are shriveling we will see in the spring

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your recent planting! It’s completely natural for leaves to shrivel as fall progresses and the plants start preparing for dormancy. Come spring, you should see new growth and many fresh leaves sprouting as your plants wake up. In the meantime, be sure to keep the soil moist but not soggy, and avoid fertilizing through the colder months—it'll help your plants conserve their energy for a healthy bloom season ahead.

If you ever want tips on winter care or need advice in spring, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to support your gardening journey!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple deer resistant?

Can Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple tolerate heat and hot summers?

  • Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple handles summer heat well without bronzing like many other varieties. Its deep red-purple foliage maintains excellent color throughout hot weather. Plant in morning sun with afternoon shade for best results. Shop at Nature Hills for healthy specimens.

What are the shipping options and costs for Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple?

  • Shipping options and costs vary by tree size and your location. Japanese maples like Inaba Shidare are typically shipped bare root in early spring or potted during the growing season. Check the product page for current shipping rates to your zip code and optimal planting windows for your zone.

What size plants are available for purchase, like gallon sizes or heights?

  • The Inaba Shidare is available as a large container tree, though specific gallon sizes aren't listed in the current product details. Japanese maples like this are typically sold in 3-gallon to 15-gallon containers depending on maturity. Check the product page for current size options and pricing before ordering.

Does Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple need mulch or special care in the first year?
