Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this Sedum full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light to ensure the foliage keeps its vibrant red color and tight habit. In too much shade, the stems will stretch out, become floppy, and revert to a duller green.
  • Soil: Excellent drainage is non-negotiable for this succulent, so sandy or rocky soils are ideal. If you are working with heavy clay, amend it heavily with grit or plant in a raised bed or container to prevent the roots from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

Water consistently during the first growing season to help the roots establish, but always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Once established, this plant is highly drought-tolerant and stores water in its leaves, so it prefers dry conditions over wet ones. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure and will quickly lead to mushy stems and root rot.

Pruning Tips

The best time to prune is in early spring before the new growth begins to push up. Simply cut back any dried or damaged foliage from the previous winter to tidy up the mound and encourage a dense flush of new stems. This annual haircut keeps the groundcover from looking ragged and helps maintain a compact, carpet-like form.

Fertilizer Needs

Sedums are light feeders that actually perform better in poor soil than in rich environments. A light application of a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer or a side dressing of compost in spring is all that is needed. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they stimulate rapid, weak growth that causes the plant to lose its structure and flop open.

Stonecrop has very low moisture needs and is very cold-hardy in growing zones 4 and up.
