  • Sunlight: Thrives in partial shade, receiving about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight, preferably in the morning. While this variety is more heat and sun-tolerant than many broadleaf rhododendrons, it still needs protection from harsh afternoon rays in hotter zones to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Soil: Requires acidic, well-draining soil rich in organic matter to thrive. If you have heavy clay, amend the planting site with pine bark or compost to improve drainage, or plant in a raised berm to keep the roots from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

Because Rhododendrons have shallow, fibrous root systems, they dry out faster than deep-rooted shrubs and need consistent moisture during their first year. Apply a 3-inch layer of wood mulch over the root zone to retain hydration and keep roots cool. Even once established, inconsistent watering can lead to leaf curl and prevent the plant from setting flower buds for the following year.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on "old wood," meaning the flower buds develop during the summer before they open. Prune immediately after the blooms fade in late spring to shape the plant without sacrificing next year's flowers. You can also "deadhead" spent blooms by snapping them off, which directs the plant's energy into foliage growth rather than seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release granular fertilizer formulated specifically for acid-loving plants (often labeled for Azaleas and Camellias) in early spring just as new growth begins.
