Glad it's settling in well, Denise. The Walker Weeping Pea Shrub can take a little time to establish, so keeping an eye on moisture through its first season will set it up for a strong root system. Thanks for sharing the early update.

The tree was delivered 6 days after I ordered it (early May) by FedEx, in a sturdy box. Tree is probably 4 feet tall, with branches at the top, having some buds. I waited 3 days to plant it, and placed it outside in the shade. After I watered in, a new, green buds came through! I planted it yesterday.I was looking for interesting, dwarf trees, doing well in sunny areas. I'm excited to see it grow;)

Cute and Interesting Tree

I received this tiny tree about three months ago. It was a twig with some bare roots. I stuck the "stick" in some dirt and watered it. In no time, it grew tiny buds and eventually they grew into long, graceful weeping stems that nearly touch the ground. This tree is very interesting and I wish I had planted it in the planting beds in my front yard instead of my back yard. It is just interesting and gives some height and texture when planted in the center of a bed of flowers. I may have to get another one for my front yard; I like it that much! It gives my yard a very serene appearance with the feeling of a Thomas Kinkade painting. If you like that look, you must get this little tree!

Hi Kristi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with your Walker Weeping Caragana! We’re delighted to hear how this little twig has transformed into such a graceful feature in your yard. It’s fascinating how fast those delicate stems grew, and we love that you appreciate both its unique texture and the serene, Thomas Kinkade–inspired mood it brings to your garden.

Your idea of planting another one in the front yard sounds like a perfect way to add that same tranquil charm to a more visible space. If you decide to do so, planting it where it has room to fully extend and compensate for any sun exposure changes between front and back will help keep its “weeping” form exquisite. Feel free to check out our care guide for Caragana for tips on optimal soil and watering to help keep yours thriving beautifully in both locations.

Thanks again for your enthusiasm and lovely recommendation! We’re rooting for more happy growth with your “stick” turned serene beauty.

A good choice for tight spaces

We purchased this tree because we needed a winter hardy tree (zone 3/4) that wouldn't grow to large for a tight spot in our front bed. The tree that came was very tall (5 feet) and had started 'weeping' already. It produces small yellow flowers and has thin leaves (almost like asparagus fern). The tree is not showy but is winter hardy and fills the spot in our bed nicely. Overall, I would say that it is a good choice for northern climates and specific applications.

Hello mjsjr,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful review of the Walker Weeping Caragana! We're delighted to hear it’s fitting nicely into your tight space and thriving in your Zone 3/4 garden. It’s a wonderful feature that it’s already showing its graceful weeping form and producing those delicate yellow flowers—that adds subtle charm even if the tree isn’t dramatically showy. Your detailed observation about the leaves is spot on, and we're glad this hardy and compact tree meets your specific landscaping needs.

If you want to keep the tree healthy and at a manageable size, consider light pruning in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. Given its hardiness, this tree should continue to be a dependable, pretty anchor for your bed for years to come. If you ever want more tips on seasonal care or companion planting for the Caragana, we’re happy to assist!

Thank you again for trusting Nature Hills with your plant choices--your feedback means the world to us.

Dear Mjsjr,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful review of the Walker Weeping Caragana! We’re delighted to hear that it fits so well in your tight front bed and thrives in your northern climate. Its winter hardiness coupled with that graceful weeping form does make it a unique choice for zones 3 and 4, and you’ve pictured it beautifully with those delicate yellow flowers and fine leaves.

Since your planting spot is limited, a quick tip is to monitor the tree’s moisture levels during very dry spells, as container and small garden plantings sometimes need a bit more attention than their forest counterparts, especially in cold weather. If you want to learn more about caring for Caragana varieties through the seasons, we have some helpful guides on our site that might offer tips for occasional pruning and winter care.

We truly appreciate you highlighting its suitability for special applications — it’s feedback like yours that helps other garden enthusiasts make confident, informed choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall and wide will this tree form weeping pea shrub get when fully mature?

  • The Walker Weeping Pea Shrub typically reaches 6-8 feet tall and wide at maturity when grafted as a tree form. Its pendulous branches create a graceful waterfall effect that drapes to the ground. Allow adequate space for its weeping canopy to develop naturally.

Does the Walker Weeping Pea Shrub need full sun, partial shade, or can it tolerate full shade?

  • Walker Weeping Pea Shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. As a tough Siberian native, it tolerates various light levels but produces the most abundant yellow spring blooms in full sun. For best flowering and form, plant in a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

How often should I water my newly planted Walker Weeping Pea Shrub?

  • Water deeply 2-3 times per week for the first growing season, then reduce frequency as this hardy plant establishes. Being a Siberian native, it's naturally drought-tolerant once roots develop. Check soil moisture 2 inches down and water when dry.

Which plants make good companions to plant near the Walker Weeping Pea Shrub?

  • The Walker's fine, needle-like foliage creates stunning contrast when paired with broad-leafed plants like Hostas or Bergenia. Its weeping form also complements upright perennials and ornamental grasses. Plant companions at least 4-6 feet away to showcase the tree's graceful pendulous branches.

Is the Walker Weeping Pea Shrub susceptible to any common diseases or pest problems?

  • The Walker Weeping Pea Shrub is remarkably disease and pest resistant due to its hardy Siberian genetics. Its biggest threats are aphids in spring and potential root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and monitor for aphids during bloom time for best results.

Where can i buy?

  • You can purchase Walker Weeping Pea Shrub from most reputable nurseries and online plant retailers. This cold-hardy specimen is widely available since it's valued for challenging climates where other ornamental trees struggle. Look for grafted standards to ensure the proper weeping form.

Does it require winter protection?

  • The Walker Weeping Pea Shrub requires no winter protection due to its exceptional cold hardiness as a Siberian native. This tough tree thrives in wind-swept plains and high-altitude conditions where other ornamentals fail. Simply ensure proper fall watering and let its natural resilience handle winter weather.
