Sun King Aralia Arrived in Very Poor Condition

The sun king aralia arrived in very poor condition. They (2) were dry, limp, and brown. I contacted Nature Hills Nursery who said to prune the brown areas and to plant. I did and they seem to be doing very well. Not as big as expected with pruning so much of the plants.

Would give 5 stars if arrived in better shape

This is a great shade perennial, but mine got roughed up a bit during shipment so I'm only giving 4/5 stars. The box it came in lacked any sort of "this end up" marking, and I think that's all it would have taken to prevent any damage. Fortunately, I planted it immediately, and it's rebounded beautifully!

Hello Wesley,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We genuinely appreciate your honest feedback, and we're glad to hear that your shade perennial is thriving despite the rough delivery. We completely understand how important packaging is for ensuring plants arrive in the best condition. I’ve passed your suggestion about “this end up” markings along to our shipping team to help improve future deliveries.

If you ever need tips or care information to keep your perennial flourishing, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to help. Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills and taking such great care of your new plant!

Aralia cordata 'Sun King'

We can see why it is an award winning perennial...fantastic larger scale perennial to brighten up those older perennial gardens that might be getting a bit more shade than they used to. The bright yellow color is just what we were looking for to upgrade our tired looking perennial border. The berries are a bonus for sure. Love this perennial

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature size and height of Sun King Aralia?

  • Sun King Aralia typically reaches 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity, forming a naturally rounded, clump-forming habit. This fast-growing perennial fills space quickly in shaded areas. Plan for adequate spacing since it spreads to create a substantial presence in woodland gardens.

Does Sun King Aralia grow well in full shade or does it need sun for golden foliage?

  • Sun King Aralia thrives in both full shade and partial shade while maintaining its brilliant golden foliage. This award-winning perennial actually prefers shaded conditions, being native to forested areas. Plant it in your shadiest spots for reliable bright color where other plants struggle, available at naturehills.com.

What are the soil requirements for planting Sun King Aralia?

  • Sun King Aralia thrives in well-draining, organically rich soil with consistent moisture. This adaptable perennial tolerates a wide range of soil conditions from slightly acidic to neutral pH. Amend heavy clay with compost for better drainage and root development.

How much water does Sun King Aralia need, and is it drought tolerant?

  • Sun King Aralia prefers consistent moisture but adapts well to varying conditions once established. This hardy perennial tolerates both Canadian-style cold and Houston-level heat, indicating good resilience. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as the plant matures in shade.

How fast does Sun King Aralia grow, and does it die back in winter?

  • Sun King Aralia is a fast-growing deciduous perennial that dies back to the ground each winter and returns in spring. It quickly fills spaces with bold yellow-green foliage and reaches mature size within a season. Plant multiples for best impact, available at naturehills.com.

Does Sun King Aralia require pruning, and when?

  • Sun King Aralia requires minimal pruning due to its natural freeform habit. Simply remove spent flower spikes in late summer if you don't want berries, or leave them for fall bird food and winter interest. Cut back dead stems in early spring before new growth emerges.
