Healthy and Happy

The plant arrived healthy and happy and is currently planted in full sun in the back yard. I expect that it will continue to thrive and hopefully produce flowers next year!

Sarah Bernhardt is a reliable bloomer once she settles in, and full sun is exactly the right spot for her. Peonies often put most of their energy into root establishment that first season, so if flowers are slow to appear next spring, do not be discouraged. Thanks for sharing the update, and we hope she rewards you with a big flush of blooms soon.

My new peony has filled out nicely

My new peony has filled out nicely. Even though it became extremely cold after it was newly planted, it looks healthy and has become a very nice looking bush. Very happy with this purchase.

Sarah Bernhardt is a tough one, and it sounds like she proved that right away by coming through a cold snap without missing a beat. Peonies can take a year or two to really hit their stride, so if the bush is already filling out nicely, you are in for some beautiful blooms ahead. Thanks for sharing the update, Karen.

Very nice

I got my sarah bernhardt peony delivery a few days ago. It was packed very well. It even had some buds on it! The reason for 4 vs 5 stars is that it was wilted. It was a bit dry when i got it out of the box.

Hello Perennial L.,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and for choosing the Sarah Bernhardt Peony from Nature Hills! We’re glad to hear that your plant arrived well-packed and was already showing those lovely buds — that’s always a comforting sign of good health.

We truly understand your concern about the plant being a bit wilted and dry upon arrival. Peonies can sometimes appear overstressed after shipping, but they often bounce back quickly with the right care. To help your peony recover, we recommend soaking the roots in a bowl of water for 1 to 2 hours if the soil seems dry before planting. Then, plant it in a location that has well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, can help support new growth, but be careful not to overwater. Also, adding a layer of mulch will help keep moisture evenly distributed as the plant establishes itself.

If you have questions along the way or want more care tips, you can always check our comprehensive Peony Care Guide on the Nature Hills website, or reach out — we are here to help your garden flourish!

Hello Perennial lover,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Sarah Bernhardt peony! We’re delighted to hear the plant arrived safely with buds and that you were pleased with the careful packaging. We do appreciate your feedback about the slight wilting and dryness—sometimes even with our best efforts, shipping can be a bit stressful for delicate plants.

To help your peony bounce back quickly, a good initial soak in water and planting in well-draining soil with honest interim shade can really revitalize it. Also, peonies generally prefer consistent moisture but don’t like soggy soil. We recommend a balanced fertilizer once the foliage returns fully, joining you in eagerly waiting for those stunning blooms!

If you have any questions as you care for your new perennial friend, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re happy to provide tips tailored to your garden’s conditions.

Keep the mwatered

I love sarah bernhardt peonies but just keep them watered. They will droop real fast if you're not careful. It's one of the few late spring bloomers that the critters seem to keep away from.

Dear Queen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Sarah Bernhardt Peonies! We’re delighted to hear how much you love this stunning late spring bloomer. You’re absolutely right—these peonies do appreciate consistent watering, and it’s so true that they can quickly droop if they’re a bit thirsty. It’s great to know they’re one of the few critter-resistant beauties you enjoy in your garden!

To help keep your peonies happy and hydrated, consider watering deeply about once a week and mulching around the base to retain moisture. During particularly hot or dry spells, you might want to lightly water twice a week, being mindful not to let the soil become soggy. Since they bloom later in spring, they also appreciate some afternoon shade in very warm climates to avoid wilting, especially if bees, deer, and other critters leave them beautifully unbothered.

If you ever want more tailored advice or tips on caring for your peonies—or garden companions alike—we’re always happy to help.

Wishing you happy planting,

Dear Queen,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Sarah Bernhardt peonies! We’re thrilled to hear you love this beautiful bloom—it truly is a majestic addition to any garden. You are absolutely right that they can droop quickly if not kept well-watered, so your attentive care is spot on. It’s great to know the critters tend to steer clear of these late spring treasures too — definitely a win!

If you ever want to keep them at their best, aiming for about 1 inch of water per week during dry periods often helps maintain robust stems and vibrant blooms. Mulching around the base can also help retain soil moisture longer and keep roots cool. And if you’re looking to extend your garden with other critter-resistant favorites, we’d be happy to recommend some!

Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback. We’re here if you need more tips or plant suggestions anytime.

Flower bloom on mother day

Tree poeny is the most attractive 12" wide red flower. Made me really joyful to see the flower bloom on that day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Kansas Peonies deer resistant?

  • Kansas Peonies are deer resistant, as deer typically avoid these fragrant perennials. The strong scent and texture of peony foliage naturally deters browsing deer. Plant them in areas where deer pressure is a concern for reliable, long-lasting blooms.

How tall do Kansas Peonies grow at maturity?

  • Kansas Peonies typically reach 24-36 inches tall and wide at maturity. Their extremely strong stems rarely need staking, even in storms. Plant them where they have room to form their natural bushy mound shape, available at naturehills.com.

What are the USDA hardiness zones for Kansas Peonies?

  • Kansas Peonies are cold hardy perennials that thrive in USDA zones 3-8. These robust plants can handle harsh winters and will reliably return each spring for decades. Plant them in fall for best establishment before winter dormancy.

How much sunlight do Kansas Peonies need?

  • Kansas Peonies thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal blooming. These award-winning perennials can tolerate some morning shade but need afternoon sun to produce their signature double carmine-red flowers. Plant in the sunniest spot available.

What type of soil do Kansas Peonies prefer?

  • Kansas Peonies thrive in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. They prefer rich, loamy soil that doesn't stay waterlogged, as wet conditions can cause root rot. Plant in full sun to partial shade for best bloom production, available at naturehills.com.

How large are the blooms?

  • Kansas Peony produces very large, double carmine-red blooms in mid to late spring. These award-winning flowers are substantial enough to make a bold statement in the garden and hold up exceptionally well as cut flowers. Plant in full sun for the most impressive bloom size.

How often should Kansas Peonies be watered?

  • Kansas Peonies need deep, infrequent watering once established. Water weekly during dry spells, providing about 1 inch of water. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues on the glossy foliage. Water at soil level early morning for best results.

Can Kansas Peonies be grown in containers?

  • Kansas Peonies can be grown in containers but need deep, wide pots due to their extensive root system. The strong stems and bushy mound growth habit make them suitable for large containers. Use a pot at least 18-24 inches deep and wide, and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
