Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Container Sizes

Quart

Plant age: 6 months to 1 year
Best for: Ground covers, perennials, ornamental grasses
What to expect: Our smallest and most affordable size. Well-suited for planting in multiples across a large area. Allow 1 to 2 seasons for full establishment.

#1 Container

Plant age: 1 to 2 years
Best for: Shrubs, perennials, smaller trees
What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.

#2 Container

Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.

#3 Container

Plant age: 3 to 4 years
Best for: Most plants, most situations — flowering trees, shade trees, evergreen shrubs
What to expect: Our most popular size. Strong, developed root system. Plants in a #3 container make an immediate visual impact from day one. If you want a head start rather than waiting seasons for a plant to fill in, this is typically the right choice.

#5 Container and Larger

Plant age: 4 to 5+ years
Best for: Specimen plants, privacy screens, maximum instant impact
What to expect: Large, mature plants ready to make an immediate statement in your landscape. We also carry #7 and larger sizes for select varieties.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

Plants growing in Root Pouch fabric containers, showing the breathable woven fabric construction

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Not sure which type you have? Check the tag on your plant or contact us and we will confirm.

It will certainly win your heart!

This lovely, rounded Rose shrub makes a big statement in sunny locations throughout your yard. And because each red bloom features a hint of both pink and orange undertones, you'll be able to partner it with just about any plant you like.

This superstar Rose is no diva! Her foliage remains bold and dark, shrugging off pesky mildew and black spot with ease. You won't even need to deadhead the self-cleaning flowers! It performs well all across the United States. Live in frosty Minnesota? Oso Easy® will manage your long winter without trouble. Sweltering in Zone 9 summers? Oso Easy® loves it hot!

Planting and Application:

These pretty Shrub Roses will suit traditional, rustic, contemporary, and ultra-modern homes with ease. They make beautiful hedges to greet your guests. You'll appreciate the elegance of a tightly controlled, formal rectangular planting. And of course, with this modern selection, you won't have much work to do! Take this idea and run with it to create a streamlined series of long, narrow planting boxes throughout your landscape. You'll instantly gain a memorable focal point.

For a continuous hedge, plant them between three and four feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Want faster results? Place them closer together. Prefer a looser look? Give them a little elbow room from their neighbor.

Of course, you'll be tempted to add them to your shrub borders. Place them on the south side of mature evergreens. Or, repeat them as a lovely backdrop to smaller perennials. Get ready to see butterflies! They'll flock to the nectar, and come back for more again and again. Why not add their "flower power" to your Butterfly Garden or include their elegant long stems in a Cut Flower border?

Freshen your existing foundation plantings with Oso Easy® Double Red Roses. Try a pair flanking either side of your front door. They tolerate road salt, so you can also use them along your street.

Double Red Rose performs very well in large containers. Can you imagine how great they would look in dark gray or dark green glazed pots? Style them however you like! Use these sun-lovers on pool decks, patios, balconies and porches that bake in full sun all day. If you have a tough spot, try these durable, easy-care landscape Roses.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Give Oso Easy® Roses good air circulation and plenty of sunshine. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. This shrub rose grows best in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Plant them in a raised bed with proper pH if you have sticky, alkaline soil. Roses appreciate plenty of Rose food to keep them blooming. Give them a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and mid-summer to support all those pretty blooms.

Apply a medium amount of even moisture to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Use a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system to keep it nice and cool. This is especially true of container-grown plants or those in raised beds. Cut down on your maintenance by installing an automatic drip irrigation system. It's easy, and the results are well worth it!

Wait until early spring to prune back last year's growth down to 12 inches. Remove any broken, crossing, or winter-damaged branches. Find more about winterizing, and un-wintering your Roses in our Garden Blog, plus all the tips and tricks you need when pruning your new prize Rose bush!

Oso Easy Double Red Rose arrived on time but not looking entirely healthy

Oso Easy Double Red Rose arrived on time but not looking entirely healthy. It was a title dried out but I potted it in large pot watered and placed on patio. Last timed I checked it was growing and looking a lot better. It has rained a lot so I've been inside for a few days. Will check again soon.
