Communication was terrible, the hydrangea was in terrible shape upon arrival

First of all, the communication with this company has to be the worse I've ever experienced, it took almost 3 months before I got the oakleaf hydrangea( I emailed this company several times regarding the shipping info with no response) not to mention that I ordered a red slipper but got a alice white hydrangea (they charged me for a red slipper tho)
Upon arrival, this plant was in terrible shape, broken new growth, torn leaves and not enough soil around its roots, the box it came in looked like it had been kicked around. Now that the hydrangea has been planted and being cared for it looks much better.
Unfortunately!!!
I won't be ordering from this company ever again

I’ve loved Oakleaf Hydrangeas for a long time - they are happy in their new garden!

I’ve loved Oakleaf Hydrangeas for a long time and the 3 I purchased have not disappointed me. So far they look very happy!

Oakleaf hydrangeas have a way of winning people over for life, and it sounds like these three are already settling in well. They tend to hit their stride once the roots get established, so you can look forward to those big summer blooms and the papery exfoliating bark that makes them interesting even in winter. Thanks for planting with us, Claire.

These are quite large, growing fast, and, awhile they lost a few leaves in transit, have replaced those and are going to blossom, too.

Oakleaf hydrangeas are tough travelers, and it sounds like yours settled in quickly once they were in the ground. A little leaf drop in transit is pretty normal, so it is great to hear they have already bounced back and are heading toward bloom. Enjoy the show, Alice!

Woody Oak Leaf Hydrangea

My husband and I moved into a home which is about 6 years old. This plant was in the garden. I thought for sure it was an oak tree, so I kept cutting it back. Upon going to a local nursery I discovered it was the Woody Oak Leaf Hydrangea. I left it alone and it bloomed beautifully this summmer. Many small shoots have come up as a result of my cutting it back for 2 years in a row. This summer it had a beautiful bloom and it changed colors with time. No care at all is needed and it is quite wet where it is located. I will try transplanting some of the small shoots.

Hi Sunny,

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely experience with your Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea! It’s wonderful to hear how it surprised you with its beautiful blooms and color changes, especially after all the pruning. Hydrangeas often handle careful cutting well, encouraging new growth — so those many small shoots are really a great sign of its resilience and vitality!

Since you have some shoots popping up, transplantation sounds like a fantastic plan. When moving those young hydrangea shoots, just be sure to keep the root ball intact and transplant during cooler weather or early morning hours to minimize stress. Also, while your location is quite wet and Apollo O flakes appreciate moist conditions, good drainage is important to keep roots healthy. Mulching around your hydrangea can also help conserve moisture and protect roots.

If you’re interested, we have a helpful guide on transplanting hydrangeas on our website that includes step-by-step tips and the best times to transplant.

Thanks again for taking the time to write — it’s great to see your garden loving that cozy spot! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you want more advice or have questions down the road.

Hi Sunny,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderfully detailed story about your Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea! We love hearing how what seemed like a simple “oak” turned out to be a beautiful hydrangea full of vibrant blooms and even color changes through the season—it’s a beautiful surprise in any garden. It sounds like your careful, albeit unintentional, pruning encouraged those small shoots to thrive, which is great! Hydrangeas often do respond well to pruning, and since your plant is in a naturally moist spot and doing so well, those will likely make excellent candidates for transplanting.

When you’re ready to transplant those shoots, a good practice is to do so in early spring or early fall when the plant isn’t putting too much energy into blooming. Be sure to keep the soil moist and give them some shade initially as they establish roots. Since your location stays wetter naturally, just keep an eye on drainage to avoid waterlogging.

If you’d like some more detailed guidance on care or tips for transplanting norms specific to hydrangeas, feel free to reach out anytime—we're here to help your garden flourish!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature size and spread of this dwarf hydrangea?

  • The Pee Wee Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea reaches 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity. This compact cultivar is significantly smaller than the native species in all dimensions. Plant it 3-4 feet apart for proper air circulation and room to showcase its four-season appeal.

Does it stay compact enough for small gardens or containers?

  • This dwarf cultivar stays naturally compact with all parts smaller than the species, making it perfect for tight spaces. Its rounded, smaller habit works well in containers or small garden borders. The compact size delivers four-season interest without overwhelming limited space. Shop at Nature Hills for this space-saving beauty.

What are the sunlight requirements—full sun, partial shade, or shade?

  • The Pee Wee Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea thrives in partial shade conditions. This native cultivar performs best with morning sun and afternoon protection, especially in hotter climates. Plant it in areas that receive 4-6 hours of filtered sunlight daily for optimal flowering and foliage color.

Does it bloom on old wood or new wood, and will pruning affect flowers?

  • Oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so pruning will reduce next year's flowers. The white conical blooms form in spring on previous year's growth and last nearly two months before aging to pink. Prune only immediately after flowering ends to preserve next season's buds.

Is it resistant to deer, rabbits, pests, or diseases?

  • Pee Wee Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea has good natural resistance to deer and rabbits, though not complete immunity. This durable cultivar rarely suffers from serious pest or disease issues. For best results, provide good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent leaf spot.
