Hosta Elegans makes babies

I was surprised to see little baby hostas growing under the "mother" plant - not just underneath, but several feet away from the plant itself! Ive potted them up and am giving away to friends, and planting in different spots. They are in a shady spot.

Hello Foxridge,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Elegans Hosta! It’s wonderful to hear that your “mother” plant is thriving enough to surprise you with baby hostas spreading out several feet away. Hostas do tend to propagate by sending out underground runners, so finding new little plants popping up nearby is a great sign of a healthy and happy plant. It’s fantastic that you’re potting them up and sharing with friends — hostas make such charming additions to any shady spot in the garden!

Since your hostas prefer shade and consistent moisture, keeping your baby hostas in similar environments will help them establish strong roots. When transplanting, we recommend using well-draining, organic-rich soil to support growth. As these young plants grow, make sure to mulch around them to retain moisture and protect tender roots during dry spells.

If you ever want tips on caring for hostas through the seasons or how best to maintain their hearty, lush foliage, we’re more than happy to provide guidance!

Large Hosta

3 of these Elegans hostas covered a large, barren area because of the shade from my silver maple tree. Nice plants!

Dear Marie445,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Elegans hostas! We're delighted to hear that they’ve flourished in the shade of your silver maple and helped transform a previously large, barren area into something vibrant and beautiful. Hostas can be such wonderful shade-tolerant options, and it sounds like they are a perfect match for your yard.

If you ever want to enhance this shaded spot even more, you might consider adding other shade lovers like ferns or astilbes to complement the hostas’ lush foliage. Also, mulching around your hostas can help retain moisture in shaded areas and keep their roots cool.

We’re always here if you need tips on plant combinations or further care advice — happy to assist you anytime!

Dear Marie445,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Elegans hostas! We’re delighted to hear that they’ve successfully filled a large, shaded area beneath your silver maple. Hostas are such a great choice for adding lush greenery in shade, and it sounds like yours are thriving beautifully.

If you ever want to keep those hostas flourishing, and maybe expand your shaded garden further, be sure to keep the soil well-moisturized and consider mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Also, occasional feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can boost their growth and color.

Please feel free to reach out if you have questions, or if you’re looking for shade-loving companions—we’re always happy to help with recommendations.

Hosta Elegans makes babies

Hello foxridge,

Thank you so much for sharing your delightful experience with your Elegans Hosta! It’s always such a joy to see plants thriving and even producing offspring. Hosta plants are wonderful for spreading some garden love with their pups — those “babies” happily filling shady spots in your garden is a classic sign of a healthy, well-established plant.

Potted pups and sharing them with friends is a great way to propagate your plants and enjoy hostas in different parts of your landscape. Since hostas enjoy consistent moisture and shade, be sure the transplanted babies get a bit of protection from strong sun and well-drained soil to help them settle in quickly. If you ever want to learn more about providing optimal care for your hosta babies, we have some handy resources on our site about hosta propagation and care methods you might find helpful!

Thanks again for your thoughtful review and for spreading the love to friends and other parts of your garden.

Wishing you happy planting,

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the sunlight requirements for Elegans Hosta—full shade, part shade, or morning sun?

  • Elegans Hosta thrives in dappled shade and understory conditions, making it perfect for areas under trees or on the north side of structures. This shade garden workhorse performs best with filtered light rather than full sun or deep shade. Plant it under flowering ornamental trees or in woodland settings for optimal growth.

How much water does Elegans Hosta need, and does it prefer consistent moisture?

  • Elegans Hosta thrives with consistent moisture but not waterlogged soil. This hardy perennial (zones 3-8) prefers evenly moist, well-draining soil, especially during its summer blooming period. Water deeply when the top inch feels dry, and mulch around these 3-4 foot wide plants to retain moisture naturally.

What type of soil is best for Elegans Hosta, including pH and drainage?

  • Elegans Hosta thrives in well-draining, organically rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0-7.0. This hardy perennial adapts to various soil types but performs best with consistent moisture that doesn't become waterlogged. Amend clay soils with compost to improve drainage and fertility.

Is Elegans Hosta slug-resistant, and how do I protect it from slugs?

  • Elegans Hosta's thick, corrugated blue-green leaves offer moderate slug resistance compared to thin-leaved varieties. However, slugs can still damage this large hosta, especially in humid conditions. Apply organic slug bait around plants or create copper barriers for best protection.

How do I care for Elegans Hosta in winter, like mulching to prevent heaving?

  • Elegans Hosta is winter hardy in zones 3-8 and naturally dies back to the ground each fall. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch around the crown after the first hard frost to prevent freeze-thaw cycles from heaving the roots. Shop quality Elegans Hosta at naturehills.com.

How long does it take for Elegans Hosta to reach mature size?

  • Elegans Hosta typically reaches its mature size of 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide within 3-4 growing seasons. This vigorous grower establishes quickly in zones 3-8. Give it adequate space from the start since mature clumps become quite substantial.

Is the Elegans Hosta I'm seeing correctly labeled, or could it be misidentified?

  • Elegans Hosta has distinctive large, heart-shaped blue-green leaves with prominent veining and reaches 2-3 feet tall with a 3-4 foot spread. The corrugated foliage with silvery overcast and fragrant white summer blooms are key identifying features. Look for these characteristics along with its substantial size to confirm proper identification.

How should I plant Elegans Hosta upon arrival, including spacing?

  • Plant Elegans Hosta in partial to full shade with well-draining soil. Space plants 3-4 feet apart to accommodate their mature spread. Plant at the same depth as the container and water thoroughly after planting.

What fertilizer does Elegans Hosta need, and how often?

  • Elegans Hosta thrives with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer applied in early spring as new growth emerges. Feed again in mid-summer to support the vigorous growth and fragrant white blooms. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this hardy perennial performs well in average soil conditions across zones 3-8.
