Initially I was a bit nervous as I did not get shipping update for about a week and when I contacted customer service I was told that they were waiting for the plants to go into hibernation before they ship. It was well worth the wait! The plants arrived looking healthy and much bigger and sturdier than I expected! Beautiful both planted outside and as a vase arrangement. Probably will get a few more to plant in some bare spots around the yard. I have also purchased from other online retailers in the past, however the quality of the plants I received from here far surpasses any other! This is my go-to online nursery from now on.

Patio Border

We planted 6 Arctic Fires to provide a border for a patio. They were beautiful during the spring and summer and decorative during the cold winter months. Very hardy plant. Seeking pruning instructions from anyone who has experience with them.

Hi Corkey,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Arctic Fire® Red Redosier Dogwood! We’re delighted to hear they have added vibrant charm to your patio through all seasons and that their hardiness has been a great fit for your garden.

Regarding pruning, Arctic Fire Dogwoods benefit from annual pruning to maintain their striking red stems and encourage healthy new growth. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring, just as new growth is beginning but before buds break. You can rejuvenate the look by cutting back about one-third of the oldest stems close to the ground, which encourages fresh vibrant shoots. Additionally, trimming any weak or crossing branches helps maintain an attractive, tidy border.

For more detailed tips and pruning techniques, our website features a helpful blog post on caring for Red Osier Dogwoods, or please feel free to reach out with any questions—you can also explore our care guides for handy seasonal advice.

We’re pleased to have been part of your gardening journey and are here to support you anytime!

Doing well

I bought 3 of these arctic fire dogwoods. They arrived packed very well but one seemed to be dead or close to it. I called & spoke to a very nice lady who said it may be ship shock & explained what to do. I'm happy to report that it has survived & is doing well.

Hi Nimble,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Arctic Fire® Red Redosier Dogwoods! We’re delighted to hear that despite the initial concern, your plant has bounced back from what sounds like ship shock—a tricky hurdle, but definitely one that with proper care, many plants can overcome. It's wonderful to know our team member was able to provide you helpful guidance during that time.

To help your dogwood continue thriving, remember to keep the soil consistently moist (but not waterlogged), especially as it gets established. Regularly checking for new growth can be a great sign it’s settling in comfortably. And as the seasons change, a layer of mulch if you haven’t applied one can help protect those roots.

If any other questions arise or you want advice tailored to your local climate, we’re always here for you.

Very impressed

I really wasn't sure what to expect. I had never seen a red twigged dogwood before. I wanted something for an area that stays kind of damp, so I planted 2 arctic fire's there. When they say red, they mean RED. I was totally blown away by the winter look. I've had both my neighbors ask what they were.

Hello Fancy DD,

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that your Arctic Fire® Red Redosier Dogwoods have exceeded your expectations. Their vibrant red stems truly make a striking statement, especially during the winter months when so much garden color fades. It’s great that you chose this variety for your damp area, as it thrives perfectly in those conditions.

Neighbors noticing is always a delightful bonus—nothing quite like a plant that sparks such interest and conversation! If you want your dogwoods to really pop even more, consider lightly pruning older stems each early spring to encourage fresh, brilliantly colored levels of stem growth. Also, a layer of mulch can help retain moisture and keep their roots cool throughout summer.

If you ever want tips on companion plants or updates on seasonal care, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thanks again for sharing your planting success!

Patio Border

We planted 6 Arctic Fires to provide a border for a patio. They were beautiful during the spring and summer and decorative during the cold winter months. Very hardy plant. Seeking pruning instructions from anyone who has experience with them.

Hello Corkey,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Arctic Fire® Redosier Dogwood as a patio border! We’re delighted to hear they brought such beauty and year-round interest to your space — those vibrant red stems truly add a charming touch in winter.

Regarding pruning, the best time to prune your dogwoods is in late winter to early spring, just before new growth begins. You can remove any dead or damaged branches as needed, and for encouraging those striking red stems, try cutting some of the older, less colorful canes all the way back to the ground each year. This “rejuvenation pruning” encourages fresh new growth that’s brightly colored and vigorous. Just make sure to avoid heavy pruning all at once—thin out about one-third of the oldest branches annually for the healthiest and best display.

If you’re interested, we have a detailed pruning guide on our website that walks through the steps, plus tips on winter and summer care for dogwoods to keep them growing beautifully. You’re very welcome to reach out any time for personalized advice or support with your border!
