Plant arrived safe and thriving

Plant arrived safe and thriving. This one I will surprise my daughter with for her front light pole. All the plants, shrubs and trees do exceedingly well for me! Nature Hills provides you vast varieties to choose from and tips to keep them beautiful. Great customer service also!

Nelly Moser is a great pick for a light pole. the lavender-pink blooms with that deep center stripe will make quite a show once she gets climbing. It sounds like your daughter is in for a real treat. Thanks for the kind words, Dixie, and for trusting us with so many of your garden projects over the years. The Nature Hills team

Great size & healthy

Great size & healthy. VERY SATISFIED! Will order from this nursery again.

Nelly Moser is such a rewarding clematis, and it really does perform best when it arrives with a strong root system already established. Glad this one came through in good shape. We look forward to your next order, Karen.

Plants are very small so I hope they end up doing well

Plants are very small so I hope they end up doing well.

Clematis does tend to arrive on the smaller side, and that is completely normal. The first season or two, most of the energy goes into building the root system before you see a lot of top growth. Give Nelly Moser a sturdy trellis to climb and a good layer of mulch over the roots, and she tends to take off in a hurry once she is settled in. Reach out to our team if you have any concerns along the way.

Totally disappointing. It has almost zero colour. The colour in the add is what I need.

"Keep her feet in the shade and her head in the sun"

I grew this Clematis in Germany, a older avid gardener told me to keep her feet in the shade and her head in the sun, in other words the roots should be fully shaded and them blooms in the sun. I blocked her roots with smaller plants and different stones strategically placed around her roots and she was placed on the south east side of our patio, she was the queen of the garden every spring and needed little attention except for watering and the occasional trimming.

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience growing Nelly Moser Clematis! We love hearing tips from seasoned gardeners like you—your approach to keeping the roots shaded with smaller plants and stones while placing the vine in full sun sounds like the perfect homage to traditional wisdom. It’s inspiring that your Clematis became the queen of your garden every spring with just watering and occasional trimming.

Your careful attention to root care really highlights how important microclimate nuances are in cultivating these beautiful climbers. For others who want to replicate your success, we recommend layering organic mulch or low-growing groundcovers to keep roots cool in warm climates, while ensuring good drainage to help keep the roots healthy. If you ever need advice on pruning techniques or want plant pairing ideas to further enhance your south-east patio spot, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Thanks again for sharing your thoughtful and gracious insights. Wishing your garden many more seasons of inspired blooms!

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Nelly Moser Clematis! Your gardener's advice to keep her 'feet in the shade and her head in the sun' is spot on, and it's delightful to hear how thoughtfully you created the perfect environment with smaller plants and stones to protect her roots. It’s clear that the queen of your garden thrived beautifully under your care!

If you ever want tips on prolonging bloom time or soil care for your clematis, we’d be happy to help. Clematis generally appreciate well-drained, fertile soil as well, so if your current setup ever calls for a little refresh, adding some compost in early spring can give your queen the boost she loves. And your south-east patio placement sounds ideal — just enough morning sun and afternoon comfort!

Thanks again for your lovely review. We’re thrilled your clematis tells such a successful and lovely story — here’s to many more spring monarchs!

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones is Nelly Moser Clematis suitable for?

  • Nelly Moser Clematis is hardy in USDA zones 4-8. This vigorous climber tolerates cold winters well but may need protection in zone 4. Plant in partial shade for best flower color retention and strongest growth.

How large does Nelly Moser Clematis grow at maturity?

  • Nelly Moser Clematis grows vigorously to 8-12 feet in height at maturity. This strong climber produces large 8-inch flowers and is perfect for training up trellises, pergolas, or fences. Give it sturdy support structures to accommodate its vigorous growth habit.

What are the pruning requirements for Nelly Moser Clematis (Group 2)?

  • Prune Nelly Moser lightly in late winter, removing only dead or weak stems. As a Group 2 clematis, it blooms on old wood in spring and new wood in fall. Cut back about one-third of the stems to strong buds 2-3 feet from ground level to maintain the 8-12 foot height and encourage reblooming.

Does Nelly Moser Clematis grow well in full sun or does it prefer shade?

  • Nelly Moser Clematis thrives in partial to full shade, unlike most clematis varieties. When planted in full sun, its vibrant pink flower colors fade quickly. Plant it in spots with morning sun or dappled shade for the best bloom color and performance.

How often should I water Nelly Moser Clematis and does it need moist soil?

  • Nelly Moser Clematis prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil but not waterlogged conditions. Water deeply 1-2 times per week during growing season, adjusting for rainfall. Keep soil evenly moist especially during its late spring and early autumn bloom periods. Shop at Nature Hills for this shade-loving rebloomer.

When is the best time to plant Nelly Moser Clematis?

  • Plant Nelly Moser Clematis in early spring after the last frost or in fall 6-8 weeks before hard freeze. This timing allows the root system to establish before blooming season. Choose a location with morning sun or dappled shade for best flower color retention.

Is there a warranty or guarantee if my Nelly Moser Clematis arrives damaged or dies?

  • Nature Hills stands behind all plants with a one-year guarantee against defects and shipping damage. If your Nelly Moser Clematis arrives damaged or fails to establish within the first growing season, you're covered. Contact customer service immediately with photos for fastest resolution.

What common pests or diseases affect Nelly Moser Clematis, like wilt or mildew?

  • Clematis wilt and powdery mildew are the most common issues affecting Nelly Moser. Good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering help prevent these problems. Plant in partial shade as recommended to reduce stress and disease susceptibility.

How do I care for new shoots in spring since they seem slow to emerge and are brittle?

  • Clematis shoots emerge late in spring and are naturally brittle when young. Be patient as Nelly Moser can be slow to break dormancy compared to other perennials. Avoid handling new growth and provide support structures early so tender shoots can begin climbing safely.
