Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this bush full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Plenty of sunshine is the fuel required to produce large, sweet berries and keeps the canes sturdy enough to support the harvest.
  • Soil: Raspberries require excellent drainage and will struggle or rot in soggy ground. If you have heavy clay soil, planting in a raised bed is the best solution to ensure the roots get the air circulation they need.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist while your new raspberry bush establishes its root system during the first season. Once established, focus your watering efforts from bloom time through harvest, providing about an inch of water per week. Inconsistent watering during fruit production often leads to crumbly, dry berries that fall apart when you pick them.

Pruning Tips

Since Heritage is an everbearing variety, the simplest way to manage it is to cut all canes down to the ground in late winter or very early spring while the plant is dormant. This technique sacrifices a small summer crop but results in a single, abundant fall harvest that is much easier to manage. If you prefer two smaller crops, only prune out the dead tips of the canes in spring and remove thin, weak stems at the base.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer or a layer of rich compost in early spring just as new green growth begins to emerge. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer because this pushes soft, new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost damages it.

Everbearing Raspberries produce a crop in August-September on the tips of the canes that formed that spring. Leave these canes in place overwinter and they'll reward you with a June crop the following spring. When those 2nd-year canes are harvested, they can be cut to the ground. Otherwise, provide full sun and a well-drained moist location for your shrub. Keep them mulched and provide slightly acidic fertilizer.
