Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this bush full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Plenty of sunshine ensures sweet, plump berries and helps dry off morning dew to prevent fungal issues on the leaves.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained, organically rich soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 6.8. If you have heavy clay that holds water like a bathtub, build a raised bed to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially while the plant establishes its root system during the first season. Once established, provide about an inch of water per week, increasing frequency during hot, dry spells or when fruit is forming to keep berries from drying out or becoming crumbly. Avoid overhead watering when possible to keep the foliage dry and healthy.

Pruning Tips

Jewel Raspberries produce fruit on two-year-old wood (floricanes), so immediately after you harvest berries in early summer, cut those specific fruited canes down to the ground. In late winter, prune the remaining side branches back to 8 to 12 inches to encourage strong, fruit-bearing offshoots for the coming season. This annual cleanup prevents overcrowding and directs the plant's energy into producing fruit rather than maintaining old, woody growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer or compost in early spring right as new green growth begins to emerge. Avoid fertilizing after July, as late-season nitrogen forces soft, new growth that will be damaged by winter frost.
