  • Sunlight: Aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct, unfiltered sun daily. While 'Natchez' tolerates a touch of afternoon shade, full sun is critical—less light will significantly reduce your total berry harvest and result in fruit with lower sugar content.
  • Soil: Blackberries thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay, amend the planting area generously with compost and coarse sand to ensure water drains freely and roots avoid rot. For sandy soil, incorporate peat moss and compost to help the ground hold essential moisture and nutrients.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist to encourage a strong, deep root system; this means about one inch of water per week from rain or supplemental irrigation. Once established, 'Natchez' has moderate drought tolerance but will still require consistent moisture from flowering through the harvest period. Allowing the plant to dry out during fruiting will immediately result in smaller berries and stressed canes, so aim for that one-inch weekly average during the hot summer months.

Pruning Tips

This type of erect blackberry produces fruit on second-year wood, called floricanes. The most effective method is to prune immediately after the late spring harvest by cutting all the spent floricanes (the ones that just produced fruit) right down to the ground. In late winter or early spring, you should then 'tip' the new, first-year canes (primocanes) by snipping off the top few inches to encourage side branching, which is where next year's fruit will form. This technique keeps the bush tidy, improves air circulation, and maximizes your production.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, complete fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge from the crown. If your soil is particularly poor, a second light application can be given right after the berry harvest to help the new canes grow strong. What you must avoid is applying any high-nitrogen fertilizer in late summer or fall, as this encourages tender new growth that will not harden off in time and will be highly susceptible to damaging winter kill.
