Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight for the best bloom production. While it tolerates full sun in cooler climates, afternoon shade is highly recommended in hotter zones to prevent the foliage from scorching or looking ragged.
  • Soil: This plant prefers moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. If you are planting in heavy clay or sandy soil, mix in compost or peat moss to improve drainage and hold the consistent moisture this plant loves.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season to help the roots establish deep into the ground. While established plants are somewhat drought tolerant, inconsistent watering causes the foliage to brown and the plant to go dormant, so regular moisture is key to keeping it lush and blooming.

Pruning Tips

Clean up any winter-damaged foliage in early spring before new growth appears. After the initial flush of blooms fades in mid-summer, cut the entire mound back by about half to encourage fresh green foliage and a second wave of flowers in late summer.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or over-feeding, as this often leads to lanky, floppy growth instead of the compact habit you want for flower support.

Small Dark-Purple Blooms

The Spiderwort 'Concord Grape', Tradescantia 'Concord Grape', has dark bluish-green foliage with purple flowers.

While the flowers open for one day, but new blooms appear from June to October. Plus, the contrast of the flower color and foliage make it a definite eye catcher! The foliage of Spiderworts looks very much alike the foliage of a Daylily, especially when it is first emerging.

Tradescantia 'Concord Grape' should be planted in a sunny area. It will tolerate some morning shade with well-drained soil. It will accept damp soil but should not be over watered. Deadhead after the first flowering to prolong its blooming time.

'Concord Grape' mixes beautifully with wild and naturalistic woodlands, in any perennial bed or as a border plant and attracts butterflies.

Try 'Concord Grape' with Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' or Alchemilla 'Lady's Mantle' for color contrasts. Clumps may be divided in early spring.

  • Purple Daylily-Like Flowers
  • Blue Green Foliage
  • Attracts Butterflies
  • Tolerates Damp Soil
