Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Dwarf Poker thrives in full sun and requires at least six to seven hours of direct light daily. While it can tolerate partial shade, you will notice fewer of those signature yellow flower spikes and the plant may lose its tight, upright shape.
  • Soil: Think of this plant as having "dry feet" because it needs exceptionally well-drained soil to avoid crown rot. If you have heavy clay that stays wet like a sponge, mix in plenty of compost or fine gravel to improve drainage, or consider planting in a raised bed.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Pineapple Popsicle regularly to keep the root ball moist while it settles into its new home. Once the plant is mature and established, it is quite drought-tolerant and only needs about an inch of water per week during the heat of summer. If watering is inconsistent or the soil stays too dry, the plant will produce smaller, less frequent blooms and the grassy foliage may start to scorch at the tips.

Pruning Tips

This perennial blooms on new growth produced during the current season, so you can safely tidy it up without losing future flowers. In early spring, give the plant a haircut by cutting the old foliage back to about three inches above the ground to make room for fresh green leaves. Throughout the summer, snip off faded flower spikes at the base to signal the plant to send up a new round of yellow torches rather than wasting energy on seeds.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge from the crown. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages soft, tender growth that can be easily damaged by the first frost. A simple spring feeding provides all the fuel needed for the fast-growing "Popsicle" series to repeat its bloom cycle until autumn.
