Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

#1 Container

What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.

#2 Container

Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.

#3 Container

What to expect: Our most popular size. Strong, developed root system. Plants in a #3 container make an immediate visual impact from day one. If you want a head start rather than waiting seasons for a plant to fill in, this is typically the right choice.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Instead, graceful horizontal stems arch outward and cascade downward, each branch laden with clusters of refreshing lime-green mophead blooms. Where to Plant

Sunlight: Fairytrail® Green performs best with four to six hours of morning sun followed by afternoon shade. In cooler climates, it tolerates more sun, but in hot regions afternoon shade is essential to prevent leaf scorch and maintain the vibrant lime-green flower color. Too much shade results in fewer blooms and weaker stems.

Soil: Plant in average, well-drained soil amended with compost. This hybrid handles clay soils better than many hydrangeas, but drainage remains critical. Work coarse sand or perlite into heavy clay, or consider planting in a slightly raised area. For containers, use quality potting mix that retains moisture but drains freely.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply two to three times weekly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Mature plants need consistent moisture and cannot tolerate drought, so water weekly during dry spells and more frequently during summer heat. Plants in containers need daily watering in hot weather. Wilting leaves signal water stress, but soggy soil causes root rot, so ensure proper drainage.

Pruning Tips

Avoid pruning except to remove dead wood in early spring before new growth appears. Fairytrail® Green blooms on old wood, meaning this year's stems produce next year's flowers, so any pruning reduces bloom display. If you must shape the plant, do so immediately after flowering ends in early summer. You can remove spent flower heads if desired, but it does not encourage reblooming and the dried blooms add winter interest.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for roses or flowering shrubs once in early spring after the ground thaws but before new growth begins. Container-grown plants benefit from a second light feeding in midsummer. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers and never fertilize after July as this encourages tender new growth that won't harden off before winter.

2 Panicle Hydrangrea Shipped - Only 1 Survived

Nature Hills Nursery shipped 2 Tidbit Panicle Hydrangeas to my home in the same container. One arrived in good condition and the other was essentially dead. I have planted the good Hydrangea, and it seems to be doing well in my garden. I recommend different packaging when shipping 2 plants together. Both plants should have their base pot on the same side of the container with verbiage on the box stating, "This Side Up". The 1 that did not make it was planted with the base pot facing the opposite direction of the other plant. When the box got turned "upside down" in relation to the Hydrangea that arrived in good condition, some of the moist soil in the "bad" plant apparently fell out.

Communication was terrible, the hydrangea was in terrible shape upon arrival

First of all, the communication with this company has to be the worse I've ever experienced, it took almost 3 months before I got the oakleaf hydrangea( I emailed this company several times regarding the shipping info with no response) not to mention that I ordered a red slipper but got a alice white hydrangea (they charged me for a red slipper tho)
Upon arrival, this plant was in terrible shape, broken new growth, torn leaves and not enough soil around its roots, the box it came in looked like it had been kicked around. Now that the hydrangea has been planted and being cared for it looks much better.

Terrible quality Azure Skies Hydrangeas

Terrible quality Azure Skies Hydrangeas. I ordered #3 pots and they took 3 smaller plants, bundled them together and shoved them into a #3. When you plant them the root systems are not even established so they literally fall apart. As you can see from the photos they are terrible quality. Avoid avoid avoid and go support your local nursery instead.

ZERO Customer Service

I ordered two of these plants. I received one, dying little plant. Emails have gone unanswered. If you call, you get their voicemail and no one will call you back. The website says “use our live chat”, but that does not exist. I got scammed by this company.

Disappointed in this one

Disappointed in this one. It looked less than healthy when received, dead leaves in the box and some were deformed and spotty. As a new gardener I thought it was just in shock from travel and planted right away. Watered often and kept removing the damaged leaves. Today I noticed fine webs on the underside, suspect spider mites. Removed bad leaves again and washed the plant. Hoping it survives. Bought 3 different shrubs, this was the largest and most costly unfortunately. Satisfied with my other plants

I Loved these! I had a pink Victorian home so wanted the White Annabelle Hydrangeas. - After a couple years they were so full and beautiful year after year. They recommended the Root booster for about $15 and added that as well. You will not regret buying these. Beautiful year after year!

Worst experience ever

Plant arrived dead. I’ve reached out multiple ways email, chat support, social media(they deleted my comment) it’s been over a week now so might as well just take this as a loss and never order from this company ever again. Google the reviews. Search Facebook. Plenty of negative reviews saying this is a scam. I should have done more research on this company.

Shes Beautiful!

Very first time planting this flower, coming from Houston Texas. I was a little nervous since these plants require a lot of care and water but she has been doing so well!!! I water her twice. Early morning before work (6am) and after sun down (after 7pm). I placed some mulch on the pot so that has been helpful at keeping the soil moist. I was really afraid of drowning her or giving too much water mostly in the early afternoon where the sun was starting to burn through leaves due to me giving it water at 5pm. Shes blossoming beautifully and cannot wait until shes fully open. I also recently purchased her back at the beginning/mid May. Very fast shipping too!

Annabelle is doing great

Annabelle arrived a bit dehydrated and that worried me. So I pampered her with water, light shade and clipped any leaves that were concerning. After a week or so, she perked up and now has a lot of good new growth. I am glad I treated the hydrangea with patience because that was all it really needed.

It's alive and growing, and extremely thirsty for gallons of water. Mine is a #3 size shrub, tall enough to have a noticeable "front" and "back." The front has a fuller look, more flowering branches, and the back has taller branches at the top and more spindly stems down the side. Probably from its orientation at the nursery. I planted it back to front before I noticed this growing pattern, but I expect after a year or two with pruning, the shape will even out. It already attracts pollinators to the pretty flowers. I've seen tiny native bees and honeybees checking it out, so we're good to go!

I was thrilled to find original Quick Fire for sale, because Proven Winners discontinued that variety several years ago. The plant is doing great, but I'm reserving judgement until I see that it is original Quick Fire and not one of the derivative varieties. I have all my documents just in case...
