My review confirms what I have witnessed froma sourwood tree that appears to have grown wildat a neighbors lot in Lecanto, Florida. It is everything that you describe above and I am very intrigued by this tree. I have landscaped most ofthe one acre lot that surrounds my home with over 90 different varieties of trees, shrubs, bushes and plants. I will research this further since there is no mention on the rate growth of this tree. Please advise how old the three foot tree is that you have available? Answer from Nature Hills: The 3 foot Sourwood would be 3 years old.

Dear R L.,

Thank you so much for sharing your reflective insights on the Sourwood tree and your remarkable dedication to cultivating your acre of landscaping! It’s wonderful to hear that the wild Sourwood tree you observed aligns so closely with what we describe—it truly is a special tree.

Regarding your question, the three-foot Sourwood tree we offer is approximately three years old. Sourwoods can have a moderate growth rate, typically putting on about 12 to 18 inches per year under optimal conditions. That means with proper care, moisture, and soil nutrients, this tree will gradually grow into the elegant specimen you admire in your neighbor’s lot.

Since you are tackling such a diverse range of plants, you might find it helpful to monitor the soil acidity and provide some consistent watering during dry spells, as Sourwoods do favor well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Our website has more detailed care tips you can review, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like further guidance on care or companion plant suggestions to complement your tree on your property.

We’re excited that your landscaping journey includes this unique tree—and thankful you’ve chosen Nature Hills to be part of it!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a sourwood tree look like?

  • Sourwood is a compact deciduous tree with a romantic weeping habit, featuring downward-drooping branches and glossy 8-inch green leaves. In early summer, fragrant white urn-shaped flowers bloom in long panicles, followed by spectacular fall color in scarlet, burgundy, and crimson. Choose this native for acidic, well-draining soil where you want reliable seasonal interest.

What USDA hardiness zones can Sourwood trees grow in?

  • Sourwood trees thrive in USDA hardiness zones 5-9. They're naturally adapted to southeastern U.S. conditions and prefer well-draining, acidic soils. Check your zone compatibility when you shop at Nature Hills to ensure this stunning native will flourish in your landscape.

How tall and wide does a mature Sourwood tree get?

  • Sourwood trees typically reach 25-30 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity. This compact size makes them perfect for smaller yards and modern lots. Plant with 20-25 feet of clearance from structures to allow for full development.

Are Sourwood trees deer resistant?

  • Sourwood trees are generally deer resistant due to their naturally sour-tasting leaves that give the tree its name. The acidic foliage tends to deter browsing deer from feeding on this native ornamental. Plant in areas with dry, acidic soil for best results and natural deer deterrence.

What are good companion plants to grow near a Sourwood tree?

  • Sourwood thrives with acid-loving companions like azaleas, rhododendrons, and mountain laurel that share its preference for well-draining, acidic soil. Understory plants like ferns and hostas work well beneath its weeping canopy. Find these perfect companions available at naturehills.com.

Does the Sourwood tree require regular pruning or special maintenance?

  • Sourwood trees are naturally low-maintenance and rarely need pruning due to their compact size and attractive weeping form. Any pruning should be done in late winter to maintain their graceful drooping branch structure. Simply remove dead or damaged wood as needed.

What soil ph does it prefer?

  • Sourwood trees prefer acidic soil with a pH between 4.5-6.0. They naturally grow in acidic forest soils and struggle in alkaline conditions. Test your soil before planting and amend with sulfur or peat moss if needed to lower pH.
