Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give your Bloomerang Lilac at least six hours of direct sun daily; full sun is key for maximizing the prolific rebloom this shrub is famous for. While partial shade is acceptable, be aware that it will significantly reduce the number of summer and fall flowers and may lead to a looser habit.
  • Soil: Lilacs demand well-drained soil, as they despise having "wet feet," so ensure the planting site is never soggy. If you have heavy clay, incorporate a generous amount of well-aged compost to break it up and improve drainage; for sandy soil, the compost will help retain essential moisture and nutrients.

Watering Requirements

For the first year, water your newly planted lilac deeply one to two times per week, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry slightly between applications to encourage a strong, deep root system. Once established, this shrub is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during summer dry periods will cause noticeable stress, resulting in smaller flower clusters and a reduction in the famous rebloom cycle.

Pruning Tips

This lilac is unique because it blooms on new wood, which is why it can repeat flower throughout the season. The best time to prune is immediately after the spectacular main flush of blooms in spring; simply snip off the spent flower heads (deadheading) to tidy the shrub and divert energy into forming the next round of buds. Think of it like a light haircut—no heavy or corrective pruning is typically necessary, as the goal is to promote continuous flowering into the fall.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs early in the spring, just as the new leaves begin to emerge. This feeding provides the fuel it needs for the initial growth and its heavy bloom set. What you want to avoid is high-nitrogen fertilizers after July, because this will encourage soft, vulnerable new growth that will not have time to properly harden off before the first winter frost arrives.

Blooms twice a year for double the fragrance! The Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac (Syringa x 'SMSJBP7') is a deciduous shrub with outstanding, returning fragrant flowers! Just as the name implies, Bloomerang® will give you a burst of spring color, then boomerang back to give you another blast of floral vibrancy from mid-summer through fall!

While some Lilac varieties will provide only weeks of floral radiance, Bloomerang® will keep going for months! The Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac is a clear improvement over the original variety, providing a much larger cluster of deeply-hued flowers for perfuming your indoor vases as well. The blooms are long-lasting on the shrub and in your bouquets, and just a few will perfume your entire space!

This Proven Winners® ornamental shrub will grow 4-6 feet tall with an equal spread. It has a compact, mounded nature, and can be easily trimmed back after its spring bloom time (if you prefer a more manicured shape). Reblooming Lilacs like these have deep purple flower buds and improved disease resistance!

Wildlife loves Bloomerang® and it's a strong grower that will produce well while requiring little from you in return. As if the bright, repeating display weren't enough, Bloomerang® acts as an irresistible draw to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds with its rich fragrance! They usually pass this shrub by in favor of tastier meals except in times of desperation.

Planting and Application:

This variety of Lilac would be a terrific choice as a floral border along your property line, or as a colorful hedge to brighten that bare, exterior wall of your garage. These will even do well in containers for your patio!

Bloomerang® Lilacs look amazing in mixed-borders and foundation plantings where their three seasons of interest really can show off! Try mixing up your living fences by mixing multiple types of Lilacs for a wide variety of color and bloom times! Or mix with other Bloomerang® varieties for pinks, lavenders, and purples twice a year!

That same compelling aroma is sure to tempt you into cutting a few branches for your kitchen table bouquets, making this remarkable Lilac variety a beneficial plant both inside your home and out. Birds and wildlife love the shelter and the leaves provide shade and shelter for you as well, so use strategically around seating areas and your property to best use these multi-purpose shrubs!

A focal point that will add eye-catching curb appeal making traffic-slowing down to have a look! Be the envy of your neighborhood with a row separating your property from the road! Screen your property from an eyesore on a busy side street, or your backyard from a nosy neighbor with these fragrant blooming shrubs neither side of the fence will mind having between them! Create garden vignettes by planting a curved row of these impressive shrubs around a focal point, garden seating or sculpture!

  • Larger Deep-Purple Flower Clusters
  • Long-Lasting Display of Fragrant Blooms
  • Repeat Blooming Spring & Fall
  • Smaller Space-Saving Size!
  • Three-Season Interest
  • Wildlife & Pollinator Friendly
  • Work Well as a Cut Flower, Screen, Hedge & Specimen Shrub

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy in USDA zones 4-7, grow your Lilacs in an area with good air circulation. Bloomerang® prefers a full sun location and must have well-drained soil that is moderately moist. Be sure to keep high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer away from the roots. Lilac also tolerates partial sun or part shade in warmer climates, especially during the hot afternoon summer heat. (But you may see smaller or fewer blooms in less sun). Mulch to keep the roots cool and hold in moisture.

Remember you should not prune your Lilac until the first set of flowers finishes in late spring, and then you can reduce the size or shape, or remove the old flower heads by giving the shrub a light trim. Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering.
