The trumpet vine arrived in beautiful condition

The trumpet vine arrived in beautiful condition. Since planting it has begun to vine up the trellis! Can't wait for the first blooms and for the summers to enjoy.

Seeing a trumpet vine take off on a trellis right after planting is a great sign, Alice. Once it hits its stride you'll have hummingbirds visiting regularly, which makes the wait for those first blooms very much worth it. Thanks for sharing the update.

If I have a 20 foot section of a building and want the red trumpet vines to grow how many should I plant

Nature Hills Nursery

Hi Jan,

Thank you for contacting Nature Hills Customer Support for asking about our Atomic Red Trumpet Vines. For a twenty foot section of a building, we would recommend planting one or two vines at most. These plants are incredibly fast growers and a single healthy vine can easily spread up to twenty feet wide once it is established.

If you are looking for a very full look more quickly, you could plant two vines spaced about ten feet apart, but keep in mind that they will eventually grow together into one solid carpet of green.

To keep them looking their best and within your twenty foot boundary, you can prune them back as much as you like in the early spring, which actually encourages more of those beautiful red flowers to bloom.

Please let us know if you need any help with planting tips or further care instructions!

Thank you - Nature Hills Customer Support

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones is the Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine suitable for?

  • Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine thrives in USDA zones 4-9, handling both cold winters and hot summers with ease. This vigorous grower adapts to a wide range of climates. Ensure you have sturdy support structures before planting, as this vine grows quickly and needs strong anchoring.

Does Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine need full sun or can it tolerate partial shade?

  • Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine performs best in full sun for maximum flowering and vigorous growth. It can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer blooms. Plant in a sunny location with sturdy support for the showiest display, available at naturehills.com.

When does the Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine bloom and how long does the flowering season last?

  • The Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine blooms from mid-summer through fall, providing months of continuous color. Dark red buds open into vivid red-orange flowers that gradually mature to ruby-red. Plant in a sunny location with sturdy support for best flowering performance.

Is Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine deer resistant?

  • Trumpet vines are generally considered deer resistant due to their thick, woody stems and vigorous growth habit. Deer typically avoid these fast-growing vines, making Atomic Red™ an excellent choice for areas with deer pressure. Plant it on sturdy trellises where deer can't easily reach the foliage.

What are the best companion plants to grow with Atomic Red™ Trumpet Vine?

  • Trumpet vine pairs beautifully with sturdy perennials like coneflowers, bee balm, and native grasses that attract the same hummingbirds and butterflies. Since it's vigorous and fast-growing, avoid delicate plants nearby that might get overwhelmed. Choose companions available at naturehills.com that bloom at different times to extend your garden's color season.
