Description
Red Banana Plant (Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii') is a tropical foliage plant grown for its huge, paddle-shaped leaves, which emerge tinted maroon-red with reddish leaf bases. It grows fast to 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, and it is hardy outdoors year-round in zones 10 and 11. Everywhere else it makes a dramatic summer container plant that comes indoors for winter.
'Maurelii' differs from the straight species in two ways: the red-flushed new foliage, and a smaller habit. It can reach 18 to 20 feet in the tropics, but in temperate gardens it tops out around 10 feet.
Use it as the centerpiece of a large patio container, beside a pool, or as the tall back layer of a tropical bed. Give it a spot sheltered from strong wind, which tears the big leaves; courtyards and walled gardens are ideal. Red Banana does not transplant well, so keep it in a container you can move rather than planting it in the ground for summer and digging it up in fall.
In colder zones, bring the container inside before frost and keep it in a bright sunroom or greenhouse, or let it go dormant in a cool, frost-free space until spring.
- Light: Full sun to partial shade, with some afternoon shade in hot summers.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. It does not tolerate drying out.
- Soil: Well-drained loam or sandy soil in the ground, a quality potting mix in containers.
- Care: Check for aphids, spider mites, mealybugs and scale, especially while it is indoors for winter.
Add Red Banana Plant to your cart and give your patio a tropical centerpiece.
