New Gingko

We have a rural Home with a long driveway . I have planted trees along the entrance beginning with a Gingko nearest the highway, followed by Oaks,Pecan, Bald Cypresses (in the low areas), more Oaks, then the new Gingko. I'm using a water collar around the base during our late summer without rain, and it's living. I'm still waiting to see new growth and buds.

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Ginkgo biloba. We're so happy to hear that it's thriving along your driveway! Just a friendly tip - Ginkgo biloba trees prefer moist soil, so make sure to keep using that water collar during dry periods. We can't wait to see the new growth and buds too! Took a long time to arrive

The first ginkgo tree arrived fairly quickly but the second took almost 3 months to arrive. I planted it really late in the year. Hopefully the second tree had enough time to settle and survives the harsh winter that Colorado is expecting this year. Other than that, good customer service experience.

Hi Vien,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us! We truly appreciate your patience with the delayed arrival of the second ginkgo tree. We understand how exciting (and sometimes nerve-wracking) it can be to wait for your plants to arrive, especially with seasonal timing and the challenges winter in Colorado can bring.

Since you mentioned planting your tree late in the year, it’s great to hear your hope that it will settle in well before the cold sets in. To support your tree through the harsh winter, we recommend applying a good layer of mulch around the base to help insulate the roots and retain moisture. If frost protection is needed, some burlap wrapping or a protective tree guard can also make a big difference. You might also find our winter care guide helpful for tips specific to your region, which is available on our website.

We’re delighted that, aside from the shipment delay, you had a positive customer service experience. Should you have any questions or need assistance in the future, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re always here to help your garden thrive.

Dear Vien,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We truly appreciate your patience regarding the delayed arrival of your second ginkgo tree and are glad to hear you were happy with our customer service overall.

Given the late planting and Colorado’s upcoming winter, it’s great that you’re mindful of your tree’s needs during this critical settling period. As a helpful tip, you might consider lightly mulching around the base of the tree to help insulate the roots against cold temperatures. If you want more detailed care instructions or seasonal tips for ginko trees in colder climates, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Gingko for Grandfather

My dad is obsessed with gingko trees! So we got one for father's day. It arrived gorgeous and packaged beautifully. It's gone though a bit of a shock since planting, but we're hopeful that it will hang on and bounce back to full glory after the winter rest.

Hi Heidi,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the gingko tree! We’re delighted to hear your father loved the tree and that it arrived safely and beautifully packaged—that means so much to us. It’s quite common for plants to experience some shock after transplanting, especially with young gingko trees, as they adjust to a new environment and seasonal changes. Giving it a gentle watering routine and allowing it to rest through the winter will definitely help it bounce back strong come spring.

If you have any concerns or want some tailored care tips as we head into winter, feel free to reach out anytime. We’re here to support the journey toward your gingko thriving with your dad for many Father’s Days to come!

Dear Heidi,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the gingko tree you selected for your dad! We’re thrilled to hear it arrived beautifully and we hope it continues to bring joy as a meaningful Father’s Day gift. It’s understandable that your gingko might be feeling a bit shocked post-planting—transplant stress can sometimes cause this initial response. Providing some extra warmth and mulch over the winter can help protect the tree’s roots and encourage it to bounce back stronger in spring.

If you ever have questions about helping your gingko thrive during its recovery, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to offer guidance tailored to your yard and climate to support a lovely, resilient tree for your dad’s enjoyment.

Super strong tree

I was hesitant to buy because it was pretty expensive. $80 with shipping. Arrived with no leaves. I planted it in December and it just sat. There was a few times I thought it was dead. Fast forward to spring, it was a late bloomer compared to my other trees but it has really flourished. I mean it’s growing like crazy. I’m really excited about watching this beautiful tree grow.

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your new tree! We truly appreciate your honesty and are delighted to hear that despite initial worries and the rocky start during winter, your tree has taken off and is flourishing beautifully in spring. It’s completely normal for some trees to appear dormant and leafless through colder months, especially when freshly planted, and it sounds like you gave it the perfect care and patience needed to thrive.

Your excitement is contagious, and we’re thrilled to be a part of your gardening journey. If you ever want tips on encouraging continued growth or some companion planting ideas, feel free to reach out. We’d love to help you enjoy every stage of your tree’s development.

Nice tree when it came

Nice tree when it came in.I planted it and it froze.

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your new tree. We’re glad to hear that it arrived in good condition, though we’re sorry to learn about the freezing weather affecting it after planting. Cold temperatures can be tough on young trees, especially right after they’ve been transplanted.

To help protect your tree in future cold snaps, you might consider using frost cloths or burlap wraps during freezing nights, and mulch around the base to help retain soil warmth. If you notice any specific damage or stresses, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always here to offer advice tailored to your particular tree and climate.

Hi Randy,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your new tree. We’re glad to hear it arrived looking nice! Of course, dealing with freezing temperatures after planting can be tough on young trees. To help your tree recover and thrive, make sure to mulch around the base to protect roots from further cold stress, and avoid exposing the tree to harsh winds whenever possible. Also, if you’re interested, we have helpful guides on how to overwinter newly planted trees that you might find useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo grow in zone 3 or zone 9?

  • Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo is extremely cold-hardy and thrives in zones 3-8. It will grow beautifully in zone 3 but won't tolerate the heat of zone 9. Choose this compact ginkgo for northern gardens where you need a tough, 2-3 foot specimen with spectacular fall color.

Does Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo produce messy fruit or smell bad?

  • Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo is virtually mess-free since most grafted dwarf varieties are male and don't produce fruit. Unlike female ginkgos that drop smelly seeds, this compact specimen offers only beautiful fan-shaped foliage and stunning fall color without any odor issues. Perfect for patios and walkways where cleanliness matters - available at naturehills.com.

How much sun does Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo need daily?

  • Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo thrives in full sun to part shade conditions. This adaptable tree performs well with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily but tolerates partial shade better than most trees. For best fall color development, provide morning sun with some afternoon protection in hot climates.

How often should I water Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo after planting?

  • Water newly planted Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo regularly during its first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, this remarkably drought-tolerant tree needs minimal supplemental watering. Check soil moisture weekly and water deeply when the top inch feels dry.

What are the common pests or diseases for Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo?

  • Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo has virtually no serious pest or disease issues, making it one of the toughest small ornamentals available. This ancient species is remarkably resilient and thrives even in challenging urban conditions. Simply provide well-drained soil and enjoy years of trouble-free growth with this living fossil available at naturehills.com.

When is the best time to plant Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo?

  • Plant Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo in early spring after the last frost or in early fall, 6-8 weeks before hard freeze. This gives the slow-growing tree time to establish roots in Zones 3-8. Choose a well-drained spot in full sun to part shade for best results.

How is Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo shipped, and is bare root okay?

  • Mariken Dwarf Ginkgo ships well as a bare root tree since ginkgos are extremely hardy and adaptable to various conditions. This tough living fossil handles the bare root process better than most trees thanks to its exceptional resilience. Plant immediately upon arrival and water regularly the first season to establish strong roots.
