Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Bloom PeriodSummer, Fall

Growing Zones 9-11
(Dahlia 'Santa Claus')! Huge, fully double blooms with slightly ruffled and curvy petals, each candy striped in bright red and creamy white! Like a whirling peppermint of color, the Santa Claus Dahlia is round and brightly hued with its backward curving, pointed petals.
Sitting atop the darker stems and lush green toothy foliage, these tubers grow fast each spring and bloom all summer through fall! Meaning you and your pollinators will be enjoying the holidays in July! Deadheading means the blooms keep popping until frost and they will fill your vases and bouquets indoors with these unique flowers!
Dahlia are perennial tubers throughout USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11 and great houseplants, annual accents, or seasonal bulbs in all growing zones. Northern growers can force these tubers indoors or dig them in the fall and store them all winter in a basement, shed, or garage.
Planting and Application:
These brilliant red and white blooms are incredible for cut flower gardens and pollinator beds! Their space-saving mounded foliage looks fantastic in pots and planters as filler, while those glorious blooms stand tall atop their slender stems as amazing focal points and colorful specimens! Porches, patios, and balconies in sunny locations allow even container gardeners to enjoy these blooms!
Force indoors in a sunny window or sunroom means you can enjoy these candy-striped blooms around the holidays. Outdoors in warm, frost-free growing zones, plant Dahlia in rows or groupings to maximize their size and color in the landscape!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dahlia blooms all summer without fading in full to partial sun locations and prefers planted in a wide range of soil types, clay, and acidic conditions, as long as they're well-drained! Soak the tubers for a few hours before planting and plant them with their fingers spread out gently and pointing downwards. To ensure even moisture, place mulch around the base of the plant. Adding 3-4 inches of mulch helps considerably. Dahlia tubers can be dug after frost, then place in paper bags or boxes of sand in a cool place and sprinkle a little water on the tubers periodically to keep them from drying out.
- Full Sun to Partial Shade
