Where to Plant

Sunlight: This perennial thrives in partial shade, ideally receiving 4 to 6 hours of gentle morning sun followed by protection from the harsh afternoon heat. In hotter climates, provide full shade to prevent the delicate foliage from scorching and turning brown.
Soil: Astilbes require soil that is rich in organic matter and stays consistently moist, as they perform poorly in dry conditions. Amend sandy soils heavily with compost or peat moss to improve water retention, or mix compost into clay soil to improve drainage while keeping the roots cool.

Watering Requirements

These are moisture-loving plants that need consistent water to establish their root systems during the first year. Even after they are established, they have very low drought tolerance; inconsistent watering will lead to crispy, brown leaf edges and poor flower production. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged, throughout the growing season.

Pruning Tips

Clean up the plant by cutting the old foliage down to the ground in early spring before fresh green shoots begin to emerge. You can leave the dried flower plumes on the plant through winter for visual interest if you like the look. This timing clears the way for the new season's growth, as the plant blooms on new stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

Shorter and more compact Astilbe, these flowers have incredibly handsome, fern-like, dissected green foliage! Gorgeous dark, glossy green, and sturdy stems hold the elegant plumes aloft without staking. Younique™ Pink has a more compact, rounded growth habit and looks like filigree balls of dark green in the garden when not in bloom.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Astilbe loves part shade/part sun locations, regular moisture, and mulched beds. They will tolerate a bit more sun in cooler climates and more shade in warmer areas. Growers on the lower end can plant Astilbe in some partial sun areas with afternoon shade when the summer sun is most intense.

Astilbe does the absolute best in loamy average soil. Also tolerant of clay as long as it is well-drained soil, Astilbe is great in slightly acidic conditions. Any organically rich, moist part shade garden site is perfect for these moisture-loving perennials.

False Spirea needs moisture. Doing their best in consistently well-watered areas and soil with high moisture retention. Easy to grow, as long as their ground does not dry out for long however, once established, False Spirea can tolerate a slight amount of drought stress.

Astilbe is resistant to both deer and rabbits, so plant these on the wooded and shaded edges of your property without worry of feeding damage. An herbaceous perennial, Astilbe does not stand up for too long after the first frost, but you should wait until early spring to prune back the mounds to clean and tidy the area in anticipation of spring growth.
