How to Use Kay Parris Magnolia in the Landscape
With a small, upright form, Kay Parris makes a wonderful anchor tree at the corner of your foundation planting. Extend your mulched bed to include one spaced 12 feet from your house.
Commercial property owners can use them as a noteworthy avenue, evenly spaced along the campus drive. For individual trees that will not touch, plant 20 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
Add several to a berm planting or as a feature planting set out in the yard. Vary the spacing 12 - 20 feet apart in a loose triangle.
Remove sod and mulch underneath. Underplant with smaller flowering and evergreen shrubs and perennials as you install the trees.

Give your trees a spot in full sun, where Kay Parris will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. You'll have the best flowering display with plenty of sunshine.
They will perform at their best in slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Use a raised bed, if you need to improve drainage.
In alkaline soils, use a three-inch layer of pine straw or pine bark mulch, which breaks down to naturally increase the soil acidity. Never let the mulch touch the trunk, and reapply annually.
Provide a regular schedule of supplemental water, if you don't receive enough rain. Soak your young plants to ensure their root systems are adequately hydrated.
Once they are established, older plants can tolerate a bit of occasional drought. However, we always recommend that you protect your investment with a long, deep soak as needed.
If you need to prune your tree, wait until after the spring blooms are past. Create a pruning plan before you pick up the loppers. Decide which limbs you want to keep, then remove anything you need to.
Even though Magnolias are not a preferred plant for deer, it's always a good idea to apply deer repellent to new trees. They are curious and hungry. Reapply according to the directions on the label.
