Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal berry production and the most vibrant blue foliage color. Plants tolerate partial shade but will produce fewer berries and may develop more green tones in the leaves.

Soil: Splendid!® Blue demands acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 for healthy growth and fruiting. Sandy loam with excellent drainage works best. If your soil is naturally alkaline or heavy clay, amend generously with sulfur and peat moss or create a raised bed filled with acidic planting mix. Add a 3-inch layer of pine bark mulch to maintain acidity and keep roots cool.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply twice weekly during the first growing season to establish the root system. Once established, blueberries need consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development in late spring through summer. Provide one inch of water per week during these critical periods. Reduce watering in fall but never let the soil completely dry out. Inconsistent watering during fruiting causes berries to crack or drop prematurely.

Pruning Tips

Skip pruning entirely for the first three to four years to allow the plant to develop its natural rounded shape and strong framework. After six years in the ground, begin annual rejuvenation pruning in late winter while the plant is dormant. Remove the three oldest canes at ground level each year to encourage fresh, productive growth. This keeps the plant vigorous and maximizes berry production on younger wood.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed with an acidifying fertilizer formulated for blueberries or azaleas in early spring as new growth emerges and again in early summer after harvest. Apply according to package directions around the drip line, keeping fertilizer six inches away from the main stems. Never use general-purpose or high-nitrogen fertilizers as these raise soil pH and cause nutrient deficiencies. A light top-dressing of compost each spring provides additional organic matter while maintaining acidity.

Description

Splendid!® Blue Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'SMNVCDH') breaks the mold for edible landscaping by delivering both stunning ornamental appeal and delicious homegrown fruit in one compact package. This Proven Winners® introduction features eye-catching dusty blue foliage that makes it stand out in the landscape whether planted as a specimen, massed as a low hedge, or tucked into mixed borders alongside perennials and flowering shrubs. The unique silvery-blue leaf color provides a cooling contrast to hot summer blooms while maintaining visual interest from spring through fall.

Dual-Purpose Beauty

Unlike traditional blueberry varieties bred solely for commercial fruit production, Splendid!® Blue was developed specifically as a landscape plant that happens to produce excellent berries. The compact 3-4 foot height and naturally mounded growth habit eliminate the awkward appearance of leggy, overgrown blueberry bushes. In late spring, the entire plant becomes covered with delicate white bell-shaped flowers that dangle in clusters, attracting native bees and other pollinators to your garden. The flowers carry a subtle sweet fragrance that becomes noticeable on warm spring days.

By midsummer, those flowers transform into plump, sweet blueberries with classic blueberry flavor. While Splendid!® Blue will set some fruit on its own, planting it near another highbush blueberry variety results in significantly larger berries and heavier yields. The fruit ripens over several weeks, allowing you to enjoy fresh berries throughout summer rather than dealing with one overwhelming harvest. Unlike birds that devour traditional blueberry crops, many gardeners report that the unique leaf color seems to provide some natural camouflage for the developing fruit.

Landscape Versatility

The compact size and ornamental foliage make Splendid!® Blue incredibly versatile in the landscape. Use it as a foundation plant near the house where you can easily harvest berries. Create a stunning low hedge along pathways or property lines that serves as both boundary and fruit source. Combine it with other acid-loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas for a cohesive planting scheme. The blue foliage pairs beautifully with golden-leaved shrubs and creates striking contrast with deep purple or chartreuse perennials.

Container growing is another excellent option for Splendid!® Blue. Plant it in a large container filled with acidic potting mix and position it on a sunny patio or deck where you can watch pollinators visit the flowers and easily pluck ripe berries for morning cereal or afternoon snacking. The compact root system adapts well to container culture as long as you maintain consistent moisture and fertilize regularly.

Minimal Maintenance Rewards

Once established in acidic soil, Splendid!® Blue requires remarkably little attention compared to traditional fruit crops. The naturally compact habit means you can skip annual pruning for the first several years. Deer typically avoid blueberries, making this an excellent choice for gardens where browsing pressure limits other fruiting options. The plant shows good disease resistance and rarely experiences the pest problems that plague many edibles.

The greatest requirement is maintaining soil acidity through proper amendments and acidifying fertilizers. In naturally alkaline soils, this means annual applications of sulfur and consistent use of acidic mulches like pine bark. But for gardeners with naturally acidic conditions, Splendid!® Blue practically thrives on neglect once the roots establish. This combination of ornamental beauty, delicious fruit, compact size, and easy care makes Splendid!® Blue an exceptional choice for modern home landscapes where every plant needs to earn its space.
