Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This perennial thrives in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light to produce its signature heavy flush of star shaped blooms. It tolerates partial shade, but you will notice fewer flowers and the foliage may begin to flop or lose its tidy, upright habit.
  • Soil: Aim for well drained soil that stays consistently moist but never soggy. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, or plant in a raised bed to prevent the crown from rotting during wet winters.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. Once mature, Lucerne is moderately drought tolerant but prefers consistent moisture to keep the foliage looking crisp and green. If the soil stays too dry for long periods, the leaf tips will brown and the plant may enter an early dormancy.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant blooms on new growth each spring, you should shear the entire clump back to about two inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring. This "haircut" removes the previous year’s dead foliage and makes room for fresh, vibrant green blades to emerge. Pruning right after the first heavy bloom cycle can also encourage a smaller secondary flush of flowers later in the summer.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release granular fertilizer once in early spring as soon as you see new green shoots poking through the soil. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this stimulates soft, tender growth that is easily damaged by the first frost. A light mulch of compost around the base of the plant is usually enough to provide the nutrients it needs for the entire season.

Stars and Stripes for your garden! Lucerne Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium 'Lucerne') is a herbaceous perennial that produces lovely blue flowers! This adorable little 'grass' enchants you with Iris-like foliage and petite, yellow-eyed blue blossoms.

The delicate blooms peek out at you amid the foliage from May until June and create a vibrant-green, fast carpet of clump-forming foliage. The centers of each bloom have a bright yellow center and the blooms of this ornamental grass have branched flowering stems.

This variety of the North American native, rambles around Missouri where it naturally occurs in damp open woods, slopes, and along stream banks throughout much of the State. Lucerne are hardy plants for a wide range of growing zones and climates.

Planting and Application:

Plant several in a naturalized area for a splash of color in spring. Creating wonderful groundcover in very little time and filling in between your perennial beds. Plant near where the gutters drain or simply allow it to naturalize meadows and hard to mow hillsides, or in informal garden areas such as cottage and woodland gardens, and native plant areas.

Excellent for edging or the front of mixed borders, or line and define garden beds with upright texture! The star-shaped flowers in bright blue to violet-blue fill in that early summer blooming period with lovely hued color. Wonderful in containers, these provide great upright form and texture fringing the patios, and the sword-like foliage looks lovely planted en masse because they are excellent at stabilizing slopes and stopping erosion.

  • Star-Shaped Blue Flowers
  • Semi-Evergreen Iris-Like Foliage
  • Upright Texture
  • Containers, Rain Gardens, Erosion Control & Groundcover
  • Variety of the North American Native

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Preferring any moist well-drained soils, this Iris family relative prefers the same conditions. Loving both the full sun and part shade, these are maintenance-free and hardy, so you won't have to spend time and effort to reap their exceptional rewards. Water regularly and do not let dry out between waterings, more while in extreme heat or containers. Deer and rabbit resistant, they only attract pollinators!

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Loves Moist to Wet Well-Drained Soil
  • Fast-Growing
  • Deadhead Spent Blooms & Prune to Ground in Winter
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant
