Hot tip for your birders out there…
Blue Jays have been known to be out there eating the eggs out of other birds’ nests. To prevent them from damaging eggs that have not hatched yet from other birds you can assist them in a very simple way. When you make eggs in your home, you typically may compost the shells, but in the spring when other birds are nesting…offer the egg shells to the Blue Jays on the ground. Blue Jays like to feed on the ground and the need additional calcium in the spring. By offering the Blue Jays in your yard egg shells underneath your feeders or on the grass it will prevent them from destroying other birds’ eggs…a win win for sure.
