Wintercreeper Sun Requirements
Wintercreeper does well with full sun and even half-day sun in hotter growing zones. Euonymus, especially variegated forms, need at least 6 hours of sun a day for the best color show. But you will still enjoy the glossy round green leaves and winter tones in partial sun/shade locations too!
Wintercreeper Soil & Drainage Needs
Tolerating moderate moisture to drought once they are established, these tough beauties' only major requirement is to be planted in almost any type of well-drained soil! The roots will not do well in boggy, water-logged, and heavy clay locations. Euonymus will tolerate light clay as long as it drains.
If you suspect poor drainage, create a bermed planting area by mounding 12-18" of topsoil and planting onto that mounded raised area to correct the drainage.
Euonymus Moisture Needs
Water new installations of Euonymus regularly during their first few months in the ground. We recommend using the Finger Test. Once established however, Euonymus are low-water-usage shrubs and groundcovers, becoming drought tolerant and xeric even! But to keep your plants stress free and growing their best in the long-term, provide supplemental moisture during the hottest heat and extended drought periods.
Fertilizing Euonymus
In optimal conditions, Euonymus grows at a medium to fast rate for fast fill and quick cover. Please check the Plant Highlights on every product page for specifics. Fertilize in spring with a good, slow-release evergreen shrub formula.
Pruning Euonymus Shrubs & Groundcover Wintercreeper
Euonymus can withstand heavy pruning, but usually, you won’t need to fuss over your plant beyond a few snips to shape or a bit of light raking in spring, they thrive without much care!
Planting Euonymus Wintercreeper Shrubs
Planting Wintercreeper is easy! Dig your hole twice as wide as the root ball, but only just as deep. Never plant Euonymus too deeply! They have shallow root systems and will smother easily.
Water your new plants well to eliminate air pockets at the root zone. Provide a moderate amount of supplemental water, especially in the first year. Outdoor container-grown plants will need consistent water their whole lives.
All plants, both in containers and in the ground, appreciate a protective 3-4 inches of arborist mulch around their root system, but not piled up against their trunks and crowns. This layer holds in soil moisture more consistently and insulates the root system from heat and chill all year round!
