Perfect for Southern gardens, the Woodard Blueberry Bush (Vaccinium ashei 'Woodard') is a medium-sized shrub that produces large, sweet, fabulous fruit! Woodard Blueberry is a Rabbiteye type Blueberry Bush, which ensures your shrub will provide you with sweeter berries that freeze well! Woodard is also one of the shortest of the Rabbiteyes, so you'll have a much easier time harvesting your berries.
With berries as delicious as this sweet variety, you won't want to miss a single one! It has an upright nature, rounded form and fiery fall color. It's a far tougher shrub than many other varieties and low maintenance as well, so won't require a lot of time and effort from you.
The delicate, bell-shaped blossoms that precede the berries are white and pink and fragrant little darlings. This spring display is such a welcome sight after the long winter's rest, to both you and your bees! The berries ripen in late-spring to mid-summer and are large with a lovely, light blue shade.
Planting and Application:
Woodard Blueberry also has many ornamental features. Plant a few along your garage or outbuilding for a lovely and productive shrub border. Woodard will do well in containers, but likewise as hedges for privacy and in berry orchards alike. Cementing your food sustainability while providing dual-purpose beauty and edible landscaping versatility!
You will however want to plant more than one variety for cross-pollination which will give you optimal yields. So plant groupings or hedgerows of mixed Rabbiteye bushes for an extended harvest and a wide variety of juicy flavors! Birds love these shrubs for habitat, nesting and of course, the fruit! You may want to plant extras just so you have enough to share!

One of the First Rabbiteyes
Woodard Blueberry (Vaccinium ashei 'Woodard') is a classic rabbiteye blueberry named after one of the original hybridizers, Dr. Otis J. Woodard. Released by the University of Georgia in 1960, 'Woodard' was one of hundreds of native 'Ashei' seedling blueberries studied closely by the University of Florida and the University of Georgia beginning in 1949.
A medium sized shrub with ornamental features and fabulous fruit, Woodard was a variety selected first for the large berry size and the excellent flavor. Requiring as little as 300 hours chill, Woodard's wide range of southern adaptability only made this blueberry variety that much more attractive.
Not quite as firm and suited for shipping and freezing, the Woodard's excellent flavor made it a quick favorite of farmers markets and You Pick growers. With this early exposure, it quickly became a home garden favorite.
