We are only given so many full moons to gaze up and admire each year. Why not bring that same beauty to your garden with a Proven Winners® White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Tree Form (Hibiscus syriacus 'Notwoodtwo')? The gargantuan pure white flowers of this uniquely shaped shrub will have you stopping short in awe during your early morning stroll through the garden!

To truly enjoy White Chiffon® though, you'll simply have to wait for the sun to go down. The fluffy centers catch the moonlight and seem to shine in a glow all their own. Words just don't do it justice! The big blooms have a cluster of smaller petals adding interest to their pure white centers.

Of course, if you can manage to tear your gaze from the flowers, you'll notice that the green foliage underneath is quite pleasing as well. Consider it the perfect backdrop for the twinkling petals. This tree form will start blooming mid-summer and will continue well into the fall. Other gardens might be getting ready to shut down for the winter but not yours! With the tree form of this deciduous shrub as part of your garden, you'll never be far from a fluttering butterfly or two!

In fact, if you aren't paying close attention, you might think your trees decided to grow different colored flowers! Pollinators and Hummingbirds will love stopping by to check out the tree almost as often as your neighbors will! Related to Tropical and Hardy Hibiscus, the Rose of Sharon (also known as Althea) are just as tropical looking, easy to care for, and resilient!

Plus, while this Rose of Sharon is a prolific grower, it's incredibly easy to keep pruned to the size you'd like it to be! Let it grow a bit larger, or snip it down to be a small tree. Low maintenance and hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these 8-12 foot tall trees only spread to a space-saving 4-6 feet in width at maturity. But you can always prune them to any size that works best in your landscape! Nature Hills growers are some of the very best in the country! They've taken many years to sculpt one of the brightest Proven Winners® flowering shrubs into this delightful patio tree form!

Planting and Application:

If you thought there were a ton of ways to use a regular Rose of Sharon in your garden, then you won't believe the versatility of tree forms! This is a perfect size for a courtyard specimen. Add White Chiffon® as a very effective focal point in your space.

Sure, you could add one or two towards the back of your gardens. They certainly have the height to make a fantastic backdrop. However, we're here to suggest perhaps making a White Chiffon® Althea Tree Form the centerpiece of your garden and watch as butterflies visit day after day.

Looking for the perfect background for your family photos? White Chiffon® will deliver and it's kind enough not to clash with anyone's outfits! This is the plant that can actually fit into your sunny side yard and cover that bathroom window, or give you something pretty to look at from the kitchen window as you do the dishes.

Try winding a narrow path to a private garden room with living walls. Great design adds a sense of anticipation and journey to your landscape. Use a couple of these near your pathways so you can really take them in when you venture out into your garden for a quick (or long and meandering) stroll. Add a tree or two to the island plantings in your yard. Not only will it create some texture but it's sure to draw the eyes!

Younger White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon tree forms can also be planted in extra-large containers and brought onto the patio or porch to create a beautiful accent. As they get older, consider planting them in your landscape so they flank an entrance. You only get one shot at a first impression and this tree form Rose of Sharon is sure to make it a memorable one!

If you have quite a bit of space, you can always utilize White Chiffon® Tree Form in a mass planting. Just imagine a field filled with shining white blooms! In formal straight rows, or in informal groupings - you'll add opulence and beauty to long stretches of ground!

Plant White Chiffon® in a Moon Garden or highlight her with landscape lighting! It is important to show off its brilliant beauty in the light of the moon each night! Reflect her blooms in a still Meditation pool or Butterfly garden!

  • Angelic White Petalled Semi-Double Blooms
  • Deep Green Leaves
  • Blooms Summer Into Fall
  • oved by Butterflies & Hummingbirds
  • Great in Small Space Gardens & Easily Maintainable Size

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The needs of these easy-to-grow Rose of Sharon trees are simple! Site them correctly and give this plant a good home and it's good to go! Resistant to many diseases, Althea are almost plant-it-and-forget-it ornamental flowering shrubs and trees!

A good home is a spot in full sun where it can bask in the rays all day long. You'll enjoy the most flowers and the boldest color if they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. For the healthiest plant, make sure that the soil it's in is well-drained. Poor soils, such as extremely wet or extremely dry, aren't too friendly to this tree form. Please follow the application rates on the label directions. Add a three-inch layer of wood chip mulch over the root system. Take special care to give young plants a medium amount of water on a regular schedule. Especially during extended periods of drought each year.

If you'd like, feel free to apply a slow-release fertilizer for your tree at that same time. Just follow the application rates on the label directions.

One of the most important parts of owning a Rose of Sharon Tree form is making sure to properly prune it each year. It can seem daunting but we promise it's not all that difficult! Pruning helps it continue to fit in its designated space and keeps it looking nice and sharp! Simply wait for early spring, then take your favorite pair of pruning shears and reduce the overall size to a two or three-foot rounded sphere.

For older, larger, trees you can cut it back to a three or four-foot rounded sphere to keep a little more height. If it's a smaller, younger, tree, make 45-degree angled cuts to reduce the overall size to a two to three-foot rounded sphere on top of the standard. For larger, older, trees, you can just reduce the overall size to a three to four-foot rounded sphere. This will allow for a little more size. Renewal every few years to maintain vigor and keep those blooms prolific!

Colder growing zones actually hinder seed production, making this plant nearly sterile. Use White Chiffon® anywhere in your yard without worrying about nuisance seedlings. However, in warmer regions, these can be a bit messy because they have so many seedlings that sprout nearby. Simply deadhead your shrub after flowers fade and remove those seedheads before they mature to combat this.

  • Most Blooms in Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture Needs - Somewhat Drought Tolerant
  • Easy-Care Plant Tolerates Humidity, Poor Soil & Salt
  • Not Favored by Deer
  • Produce Few, If Any Seeds

If there were any possible way to make the moonshine a little brighter each night, adding a White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Tree Form to your garden would be it. Tree forms are all the rage and you don't want to be the last one in the neighborhood to have one. Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don’t forget to check which form you’re getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
