Weigelas have always been popular shrubs, and Java Red Weigela (Weigela florida 'Java Red') lives up to its family reputation with a stunning spring display and reliable, decorative foliage with just a touch of caffeinated color. The drifts of buds start out red in spring, transitioning to delicate trumpet blooms of pink!
Even after the spectacular spring/early summer show, Java Red Weigela will continue to prove its worth with burgundy-tinted, deep green foliage that maintains its vibrant visage all summer and into fall, including a rebloom later in the season. This picture-perfect display will provide a lively decorative addition to your landscape, as well as create a boon for your early pollinators! Plus the trumpet-shaped blooms are perfect for nectar-seeking Hummingbirds!
Your Java Red Weigela is a deciduous shrub that has a compact habit and moderate growth rate. Some people think that a shrub this valuable must be difficult to grow. However, Java Red is easy to grow, as well as highly versatile throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8! Weigela can be very late to leaf out in spring, so be patient if you don't see signs of life on your shrub right away.
Planting and Application:
Java Red looks remarkable as a border, along an outbuilding or even planted as a single focal point amid other, less-showy plantings. Java Red is actually a dwarf-sized ornamental, so it's an excellent way to have the joys of a Weigela in your yard without taking up a lot of space! Java Red can even be used in containers and planters around sunny porches and patios! Their space-saving size makes these ornamental accents perfect for container gardeners and balcony plantings alike!
It's a Weigela variety that looks just as great an unpruned, informal low hedge as it does as a pruned into either a fountain-like or manicured look, so can add interesting color and definition anywhere, without a lot of effort from you. Create low facer shrub rows, or add pops of spreading color along your paths, walkways, and foundation plantings! Try creating a flowering hedge that screens your front yard from the sidewalk for just a touch of pretty privacy!
- Reddish Buds Open to Pink Spring Flowers
- Decorative Dark Red-Tinged Foliage!
- Wildlife Interest - Pollinators & Hummingbirds
- Arching Dwarf Sized Shrub
- Works Great in Containers, Low Hedges, Specimen & Foundations!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant in full sun for the best color. Weigela shrubs require at least six hours a day, with eight or more just improving the color and quality. Super easy to grow and doesn't fuss or require fussing. Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.
Weigela won't need much pruning, or deadheading to trigger a rebloom later in the season. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
- Most Blooms & Best Color in Full Sun
- Hardy & Adaptable to a Variety of Well-Drained Soils
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Tolerates Urban Conditions
- Easy Care & Low-Maintenance & Deer Resistant
- Prune After Spring Bloom & No Deadheading Required
