Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

The gorgeous Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Violet Satin® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus 'Floru') is a deciduous shrub with ornamental characteristics. Your Violet Satin® Rose of Sharon's blooms are sure to be an arresting sight in your landscape! Each large, single blossom is deep-pink, accented by a dark red center and prominent stamen.

Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and bees will certainly take notice and appreciate the addition of these large flowers to your yard! The colorful blooms have an exotic appearance that will provide an almost-tropical feel to your garden from summer to fall. Violet Satin® is even a prolific bloomer, so you're sure to have an abundance of blooms throughout the season.

Violet Satin® is a low-maintenance Proven Winners® selection and a tremendous improvement in hardiness. It is drought and heat tolerant, doesn't attract deer, and is generally easy to care for. In general, Violet Satin® is clearly superior to older and weaker varieties. These can also be trained into a small, ornamental tree form by removing the lower limbs and exposing the lower multi-stemmed branching! Plus, beginner and experienced gardeners can both have the same effect in their gardens!

Also known as Althea, and related to Tropical Hibiscus, these are just as brilliant and easy to grow as their cousins! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9 and grows to a slim but tall 8-12 feet in height and 3-5 width! You can even prune these smaller to suit your own landscape needs.

Planting and Application:

Use this three-season accent as a specimen throughout the landscape where it can shine in the sun and attract attention in key locations! Pollinator gardens, Cottage gardens, and Perennial borders are ideal settings for these lovely blooms! The nearly columnar form is great for softening building corners, anchoring foundation plantings, and punctuating lining pathways are ideal locations to best show off Violet Satin's® best features!

Space-saving slim profile shrubs with high-impact color are fantastic for smaller courtyards and anywhere their low-maintenance nature can really shine! Spruce up a Rose garden or pollinator border to set off every other plant! You'll love having one as pinpoint shade and privacy around seating areas, the soft and soothing colored flowers add a cool and calming effect to Meditation gardens and sunny hot porches and patios alike!

  • Deep Pink Petals & Dark Red Eye
  • Prolific Blooms From Summer Until Fall
  • Perfectly Sized for Modern Gardens
  • Great in Containers & Along Borders
  • Hummingbird & Pollinator-Friendly
  • Specimens, Borders & Hedges, Full Sun Landscapes

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Woody Hibiscus are slower to emerge in the spring but quickly grow to an impressive full height once they do. Helene is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, but its best flowering occurs in full sun. Altheas performs well in almost any soil, except if it's too dry or too wet, but provide moderate consistent moisture for new plants while they get their roots established. Rose of Sharon loves sunshine! Plant it in a spot where they will get at least six hours of sunlight a day. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Use a 3 to 4-inch layer of arborist mulch over the top of the root system to keep them nice and cool.

This pretty shrub blooms on new wood, so Prune Althea in early spring to either shape or control the height. You'll have flowers later that season, no matter how tightly you trim them in spring. You can even train these shrubs into multi or single-stemmed tree forms! Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.

Modern Rose of Sharon actually has reduced seed production, making this plant nearly sterile. Use anywhere in your yard without worrying about nuisance seedlings. In some areas, these seeds can sprout, so Nature Hills employs Plant Sentry™ to ensure these plants won't ship into areas where they can become a problem.
