A Columnar Tupelo: Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum
Rapunzel would feel right at home letting her hair down from the top of the Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica 'WFH1'). This towering Black Gum will stand out on the block! Making a name for itself by outperforming most of its peers while keeping its slim figure.
The Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum soars, growing in a narrow, columnar form! Selected from a native Ohio Black Gum species, this new variety brings that hardiness and adaptability with it, including increased cold hardiness! Tolerating a wide range of USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9.
Its columnar form makes this Tupelo, also known as Sour Gum Trees, so attractive and the strong straight center leader stays compact in lateral size. This makes it an ideal Tupelo for smaller yard and landscaping uses.
When it comes to the Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum's foliage, expect oval shiny green leaves that create a dense display, lasting spring to fall! When temperatures drop, the Tupelo Tower™ turns from a verdant green into a blazing, showy specimen!
Its foliage takes on an autumnal spectrum of yellows, flame-orange, and fiery red. In fact, this humble tree with its tear-drop-shaped canopy looks like a living bonfire! Female trees of this cultivar even produce small dark blue fruit that birds adore!
Landscape Application:
Why choose a Black Gum? They offer a low-maintenance, attractive display, and are on the top of the list for wildlife favorites. Birds, bees, and squirrels cannot help but flock to Tupelos. They love to nest in its branches and snack on its fruit.
Homesteaders and bee-keepers love the Tupelo tree because of the incredible honey that bees produce from these trees! What a great way to earn some passive income with these low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly trees!
As its name implies, this tree also makes for a lovely height accent among your other shrubs and trees. Of course, adding one by your woodland area for wildlife is a kind gesture. The slim profile makes Tupelo Tower™ a great front yard specimen and street tree!
Use your Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum as a property perimeter marker that will provide a lovely show come fall and plenty of privacy when you're out enjoying your yard.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Sometimes spelled one word - Blackgum, this Tupelo trees grow best in full sun and handles partial shade in hotter growing zones. They will thrive with almost no maintenance once established!
These trees prefer moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil types but can handle some dry soil and moist soil environments once established. Add a 3-4-inch layer of pine bark or pine straw mulch over the root system to support the pH levels and hold soil moisture in the ground more consistently.
Add Nature Hills Root Booster to your order, and apply it during planting according to the directions. Our expert plantsmen swear by this formula, which enables your tree to access water and micronutrients more efficiently over its entire lifetime.
Give your tree regular schedules of deep watering during its first year. This is most important to help your tree establish a deep root system.
Use the "Finger Test" to see when your tree needs water and you can read about how to do that in our Garden Blog!
Apply slow-release fertilizer for trees in early spring. Always follow the application rates on the label.
With a moderate to slower growth rate, minimal pruning is needed to shape young trees in the early spring. The goal is to develop a well-balanced branching structure that allows sunlight and air circulation to penetrate the canopy.
- Exceptional Cold Hardiness
- Full Sun & Tolerates Light Shade
- Well-Drained Acidic Soil
- Moderate Regular Moisture Needs
- Prune In Late Winter/Early Spring
- Disease & Pest Resistant
