With its yellow jersey and cool-headed determination, it's easy to see why the Tour De France Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Tour De France') is the leader of the pack! While less scandalous than past Tour de France winners, this Iris is just as impressive! It offers the same remarkable level of endurance needed to win stage after stage to achieve the yellow jersey. If you want a real winner that will make your heart race, you need this Iris!
The Tour De France Tall Bearded Iris comes alive with its wide, golden honey falls and white to cream-colored standards. This cheery mid-season blooming Iris produces some of the largest blooms you'll find! With perfectly frilly margins from top to bottom, these flowers are much prettier than some of the sweaty cyclists you'll find riding in The Tour.
The Tour De France Tall Bearded Iris offers a subtly sweet scent. This bright aroma charms Hummingbirds and pollinators, so don't be surprised when they stop by for a snack and to ask this yellow jersey wearer for an autograph. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 9, this Tall Bearded Iris grows up to 35 inches tall and spreads its sword-like green leaves into clumps 12-18 inches wide!
Planting and Application:
For a championship garden, plant your Tour De France Tall Bearded Iris among early-season and late-season bloomers in your Cottage garden or herbaceous Perennial border. This sunny beauty also looks striking when planted along your driveway or foundation!
Any garden becomes a Pollinator garden and cut flower border for floral arrangements with a few groupings dotting throughout your landscape! Appearing both formal or informal in any sunny setting! This perennial will come back bigger and bolder year after year! And you don't have to worry about rabbits or deer raining on your day.
This Iris is deer and rabbit-resistant, so go ahead and run a long row of them as backdrops, pathway edging, or facer plants! Go bigger and plant drifts of these easily naturalizing perennials for en mass plantings that will light up the landscape! This beauty works beautifully as a thriller and vertical element in the container garden too!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
While the top athletes that compete in the Tour De France train their entire lives to be able to compete, this Iris won't make you break a sweat when it comes to maintenance. It's easy to care for, especially once established! For best results, plant your Tour De France Tall Bearded Iris grows from fleshy rhizomes, so it does best in well-drained soil that will never become soggy. It also prefers moderate to low-moisture soil once established.
When you plant yours, ensure water can easily shed away from the area, mounded berms being the best. Once established, this German Iris variety is relatively drought tolerant! Cover the roots with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to hold moisture in the soil better and insulate the rhizomes.
Information About Bare Root Iris
Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots. Container plants are well-grown in the nursery for several years in their container to establish a strong root system.
When planting Iris, which are best planted in early to mid-fall, ensure 1/3rd of the rhizome is exposed to sunlight with the roots buried underneath. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover them in the spring.
